Iris Trousseau or the Scent of a Baroque Time Travel
Excerpt from my blog:
...
Thoughts and feelings are swirling around inside me. They say that scents can trigger emotions, awaken memories, and bring lost parts of life back to life in an instant.
With Iris Trousseau, something entirely different happens to me! It feels as if I have been pulled into another dimension! Impressions rain down on me like fragments of a puzzle. At first, the picture seems rather difficult to piece together.
A pearl-gray, tightly woven cashmere blanket envelops me. I feel both coolness and warmth at the same time. It seems as if I have been transported to another era. Before my inner eye, I see flickering candlelight. I find myself in a large, dark room illuminated only by the light of grand golden chandeliers. I hear soft whispering and giggling, and I see masked figures flitting past me. My gaze wanders over the thick high stone walls, the richly gilded furniture, the heavy burgundy velvet curtains, and I suspect that I am in a castle somewhere in Europe.
Behind me, I hear a door opening, and sparkling musical notes reach my ears. Spontaneously, I turn around and see dancing couples swirling through a richly decorated hall full of joy and energy. A grand celebration seems to be underway. A masquerade ball!
Now various scents also reach me. My nose catches a hint of incense and candle wax. And a bouquet of other pleasant aromas that I identify as perfumes of the dancing society. But as soon as I become aware of these scents, a very special fragrance rises to my nose. It feels both light and dense. Cool and warm. Distant and elegant yet enveloping and smooth. A scent full of darkness and candlelight. A perfume full of depth and mystique. Danger and sensuality. A baroque vampire scent.
I am almost hypnotized by it. My face stretches towards the fragrance like a plant reaching for sunshine. Tears of emotion at its beauty sparkle in my eyes.
I look down at myself and see a heavy purple velvet dress with an embroidered corset. My feet are adorned with matching dance shoes. I am ready to partake in the mystical soirée. And yet, I want to linger here for a moment in peace, in intimate solitude with this wonderful scent that envelops me like a second skin or a velvet cloak. I want to snuggle into it. Enchanted and calmed at the same time.
Iris Trousseau is a truly astonishing polymorphic fragrance. Mysterious, sublime, baroque, sensuous in a slightly dangerous way.
Rarely have I been so captivated by a scent!

I have to wait for my bottle to arrive.
You mention Iris Silver Mist, Iris Cendre which I own and love !
Yet, I wonder if the term "sweet" that the classification chart denotes is something gourmand sweet (hope not), balsamic sweet or powdery sweet.
What would be the closest among the following?
- Van Cleef & Arpels BOIS d'IRIS,
- Prada INFUSION d'IRIS ABSOLUE
- Celine PEAU NUE
- Perfumer H DUST
- Dior DIOR HOMME INTENSE
I would love to know your sensible perception on it.
😊
Off the top of my head, I would say that none of the fragrances you mentioned really remind me of **Iris Trousseau**. However, I wasn't familiar with **Prada Absolue**. I only know the classic **Infusion d'Iris**, which I love, but it's much more transparent and lighter than **Iris Trousseau**. I find **Peau Nue** less velvety and drier than **I.T.**, also a bit more "edgy."
I really need to smell all the fragrances again to answer you properly.
Regarding your question about sweetness: I find **I.T.** only minimally sweet. I don't particularly pick up on the tonka bean. In my opinion, it mainly contributes to the overall velvety impression.
As for the comparison with other iris-based fragrances, I didn't compare them directly. It's really just a spontaneous comparison based on my memories. The three fragrances I mentioned are certainly not identical to Iris Trousseau. It's mainly the quality of the iris and the feeling it conveys in the scents that reminded me of those three. That density, the powdery-earthy, slightly green, and velvety aspect. Iris Trousseau is the smoothest and sweetest of the three mentioned. However, it's not gourmand-sweet as you might fear.
Now I'm just worried that the 50ml bottle won't be enough since it really has the potential to be a signature scent!
I'm curious to see how you'll perceive it when you get to test it.
Other iris fragrances that came to mind when I sprayed it:
- Lutens' Iris Silver Mist
- Naomi Goodsir's Iris Cendré
- Iris Gris by Jacques Fath
All three fragrances are very high-quality and elegant. Iris Trousseau also reminds me a bit of Guerlain's Après L'ondée, with that poetic-melancholic quality that defines the scent in my eyes.
It's definitely a worthy signature scent candidate! I don't want to be without it anymore!
Yes, I really fell in love with the scent.
I even postponed my visit to the rabbits I take care of by two hours!
(It wasn't a set appointment, so no problem;))
I had just sprayed the fragrance and was about to head outside… and then I just couldn't leave before trying to express my impressions and excitement.
It could really become my next signature scent!
