Red Dragon 赤 龍
Bhutan Red from Ensar Oud. According to Ensar, this was the first Bhutanese oud oil they distilled back in 2009. There aren't many out there, so I am glad to pick this one up when it was offered, for a limited time. The oil is 15 years old now, and those numbers add to its depth. It is a deep and rich oil, very tenacious. The name is aptly chosen. It smells vividly red. Its profile shares similarities to traditional Chinese oils and Hindi to some extent. I'd say closer to Chinese overall. I also get an almost red fruit Crassna vibe akin to Cambodia, but it's the Muana accord that paints that impression.

The opening is powerful—full-bodied leather with some barn facets pressed against an eye-burning red background. The red smell is attributed to a Laterite soil-like facet, naturally high in iron oxides, and the Muana accord. There is an undeniable earthiness to its opening, while the Muana accord I would describe as a combination of rooibos tea, milk, cinnamon, honey, and vanilla. This accord is the hallmark of this oil. The barn and leather qualities from the opening start strongly but fade away after a couple of hours. The oil has a deep resinous smell. The soil note dissipates shortly after the opening also, making way for other faint pollenesque notes and creamy white florals. The more it lingers on the skin, the more resinous it gets and the more vivid the Muana accord becomes. The late dry-down shifts away from the punchy opening toward a meditative and serene, red-hued Muana goodness that calms the senses.

A vertical progressive oil of great beauty, with slight traditional attributes. It sets itself apart through quality, smoothness, and unique topographic flavors, showcasing bright colors like red, golden, brown, and green.
