I associate the mint with penny royal, crushed underfoot on a walk, releasing its fragrance momentarily. I was unprepared for the creamy Jaffa likeness to Elixir des Merveilles, or following on by association to Terre D'Hermes (JCE describes Eau de Merveilles as the sister scent to TDH)

Now push those comments aside. The amber and Iris heart of Nuit Etoilee is what remains. If this is what camping under the stars is then I can only suggest that it's 'glamping' and the lackeys doing all the work don't smell at all like this! It's not overpowering even as an EDP. I want more of it. I want to apply in in the morning and keep it going all day. It's beautiful.....and different, and soft but refined. I don't find as much smoke in this as exists in Eau du Sud, which I am also fond of. A winner for sure.

Unexpected

From its very unusual notes, I wouldn't have expected Nuit Etoilée, starry night, to captivate me, but it has. The unusual doesn't always work, as we know, and for me, Iris is iffy indeed. One false step and I detest it in a fragrance. Not this time. Sniff, close my eyes and I am outside on a Balkan night, mint and citrus growing nearby, pine and fir. As I let a delicious piece of savory herb infused caramel (Immortelle's scent) melt in my mouth, I hold a single iris to my nose and look up at the stars. What a magical, strong and, in my experience, original perfume!

Refreshing warmth only partly sells the fantasy...

Nuit Etoilee Eau de Parfum opens with a refreshing cloud of spicy sweet peppermint. Its sparkling, stimulating, and uplifting. Pine bolsters the mint, steering your mind to images of a forest. As the initial burst of fresh mint begins to quickly fade, a fluffy warm bed of immortelle and soft woodsy notes reveal themselves. This dry, sweetened, aromatic immortelle steers the mind from forest to sun-warmed wildflower pastures in late summer or autumn. The contrast of cooling and warming notes creates an interesting tension, but I'm not fully convinced of a "Starry Night". The warm immortelle lacks the crisp transparency I desire from the name.

Despite some disappointments, I wear this fragrance for its calming and transportive effects. Its not something I would consider mass-appealing or stylish and yet I still find it compelling enough to keep.

Slightly Deeper Version of th Original EDT

Upon application, Nuit Étoilée EDP has a deeper ambiance and the mint and the citrus are less prominent than in EDT. But overall they're very similar and it's really difficult for me to tell them apart. The sillage is moderate and the longevity is just excellent, 12h+. Since the EDT already has a pretty good longevity on me, I'm going to stick with my EDT and save myself some extra bucks. But for those who have difficulties with perfume longevity in general, EDP is a good option to experience this wonderful fragrance and it worths the price totally.

Once upon a time...

...a winter's tale. I have already told you about my winter love for "Nuit Etoilée EDT." After enjoying this fragrance so much, I simply couldn't resist trying the EDP as well. However, although the two perfumes are quite similar at first, the EDP is not a winter scent for me.

Both fragrances start off minty fresh, but the lemon skillfully prevents it from drifting into a gum-like territory and perfectly rounds off the peaks that mint can sometimes display. Fir and pine add spice and depth, creating a naturalness reminiscent of an evening walk in the woods. While the EDT retains this nuance and only becomes a bit warmer in its aura through angelica and strawflower, the EDP takes a different direction. Where the EDT shines with clarity, amber and iris turn the tide for the EDP, laying a powdery veil over everything. This makes the EDP feel a bit more..., how should I say..., like perfume. It sacrifices a touch of its naturalness but appears somewhat finer and more elegant.
This fragrance wants to be taken into the city, perhaps to a nice little café under the starry sky of Paris on a not-too-cool late summer night, while its cousin would surely love to accompany me on my nocturnal strolls through nature in icy cold.

Thus, the EDP and the EDT remind me a little bit of a book from my childhood:
"The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse."
Both mice were fundamentally very similar, yet so different. A very charming tale!
And here we are again with the opening words: Once upon a time...
