There is a kind of beauty……
…….that transcends “personal preference”…..a beauty that must be clearly acknowledged, even if it does not match personal taste…..

And I think this is perhaps the greatest compliment one can give to a perfumer…….

MALACHITGRAU is such a fragrance for me…….

It is incredibly subtle and exquisitely composed, and I have not smelled anything like it a thousand times before…….

The scent begins with an exceptionally beautiful citrus-fresh-spicy note, which soon settles on soft, lush green moss and dew-fresh vetiver…….

I can hardly perceive the iris in isolation…..but I do notice a wonderfully aromatic-earthy rootiness…

A misty, delicately smoky aspect is also undeniable…..

I would describe the overall impression of the fragrance as warm, rather dry, and earthy-woodsy…..

In contrast to many other fragrances that claim the theme of “authentic nature” and then end up smelling like a freshly disinfected artificial palm or simply undefined, dull, and unrefined, MALACHITGRAU succeeds remarkably well in convincingly capturing the forest or nature theme……

Personally, the fragrance becomes a bit too woody and too masculine for me over time……but this absolutely does not change the fact that here a superb fragrance has seen the light of day……

The Slightly Different Fresh Scent
I have now thoroughly tested Malachitgrau and used up my 2 ml sample. Therefore, I think it is time to dedicate a review to this fragrance as well.

Once again, I want to express my great respect for Martin Fuhs for having founded his own brand.

Now to the scent itself: Malachitgrau starts off spicy fresh. I particularly like the bitter orange combined with the pepper and the typical fresh components found in numerous colonias. After about an hour, Malachitgrau transforms almost completely. A spicy vetiver emerges, comparable to that in Vetiver Parfum. I also really enjoy the typical cedar note in the heart. I can also detect cardamom. Cardamom is an interesting and characterful note for me, and here it has been used in a very good dosage. In the base, there is another twist with a well-recognizable patchouli note. The oak moss adds a green note to the whole composition. I would describe the base as earthy, green, and slightly animalic.

Malachitgrau has particularly piqued my interest due to this wonderful transformation. The progression from spicy citrus to earthy, green, and slightly animalic is a well-executed transformation that is often hard to achieve.

The longevity on my skin is very good. Easily over 10 hours, and the sillage is also noticeably beyond an arm's length for 5-6 hours. Only after 9-10 hours does Malachitgrau become close to the skin.

the hot Father Ralph!…
…rolls passionately with Rachel Leigh in the surf.
Ah, those were the days!…

I am currently testing the (at the time of this review four) shades of gray, and this is so far my favorite.

To my great surprise, since the fragrance pyramid reveals nothing of the sort, "Malachitgrau" is for me *the* incense scent! So penetratingly Catholic, one might spontaneously convert. This is exactly how an old church ship smells to me, the historic masonry along with the wooden benches. Perhaps also an old religious library, run by silent monks, with historical texts in brittle leather bindings.

And it's so incredibly sexy that the fragrance screams "Take me! Buy me!" imperatively from my forearm. Ah, Father Ralph, you hot thorn bird…!

The scent starts with a wonderful, citrusy freshness that holds up remarkably well. It could almost come from mint or nose-clearing eucalyptus, but is served sparklingly by the hesperidic bergamot-mandarin-lemon-bitter orange ensemble, allowing metallic peaks to rise continuously, breaking through the dark-warm-soft carpet in a dancing manner.

Malachitgrau is a warm, soft, cozy perfume that envelops you like thick wool. If it were a color (which, as a synesthete, is unavoidable for me), it would be a deep eggplant. It is dark and serious, but also a bit comforting. And for me, above all else, extremely incense-like and sacred!
At the same time, it is always interwoven and uplifted by a network of fine, dazzling bright yellow freshness spritzes.
Mineral? Yes, also. Damp, gray pebbles.

If I had to assign a season to "Malachitgrau," it would most likely be autumn. November scent. But still wearable in winter. However, it is not so heavy/sweet/loud that it would be completely unsuitable for other seasons.

I don't get forest here, unlike many other reviewers. For me, as a big fan of forest scents, this is not a forest scent - one cedar does not make a forest! ;) Interesting how perceptions differ.

My association is more: In front of the fireplace, snuggled up, calm, peaceful, red wine.
(Okay, maybe Father Ralph on the bearskin rug too)

I find it astonishing and exceptionally well done how the notes of the pyramid intertwine equally and permanently here. Yes, the base notes carry the perfume and are present - but also cardamom, also lemon and pepper, also the very lightly powdery iris! The whole is more than the sum of its parts.
As a "freshie," I love the lasting freshness aspect in all of the confessional litany.

The perfume seems to me to be well wearable for work. I experience both the sillage and longevity //UPDATE/EDIT: as good// (more H! than S), but this is also desired by the creator and corresponds to his style & handwriting. I agree that this level of performance and somewhat subtler "external effect" suits this scent.

"Malachitgrau" has for me a nuance that feels like anticipation in the stomach and prickles over the warm soft violetness, along with a hint of light smokiness. Suitable for more noble, classic occasions. Very sophisticated.
I also find the simultaneous presence of a prickling freshness on a warm-ambered base irresistible - for me, the absolute pied piper.
What still wafts briefly, albeit distantly, in the fragrance memory center: A little idea of "Encre Noire (Eau de Toilette) | Lalique." Here served with freshness.

Is this now a purely masculine scent? Guys, I don't care, I wear your stuff. This is neither a pure aftershave nor purely herbal scratchiness. Ladies, let it dry down a bit - before you shake your heads and curl your lips at the offered soutane. ;)
As a "blind surprise gift" for the beloved, I would not recommend "Malachitgrau" nonetheless.

Well done, Mr. Fuhs. If I can still convince myself regarding the not screaming (but also certainly not bad! Just not at the level) H/S (I like to have a bit of "oomph"), a decant will very likely become a bottle.

UPDATE 15.09.22: Father Ralph has moved in. Performance is flawless with a proper spray from the 50ml bottle. The bottle is also exactly my thing - simple, clean, minimalist, and pleasing!

Subtle Forest Spirit
I admit, the fragrance pyramid contained a rather concentrated collection of notes that I do not count among my preferences. To begin with: I find the scent wearable for women, and it certainly works well for layering if one wants to "feminize" it.
Malachite is a gemstone known for its calming and pain-relieving effects, displaying colors ranging from light green to black. The name of the perfume is 100% fitting here.
I have the association of a forest in the top notes, but I don't envision a German oak forest; rather, I see a forest in Italy or Greece. The citrus notes come through nicely, but they are not overwhelming, and after a while, I smell herbs, fine smoke, and essential oils like eucalyptus. Moss is not dominant here; instead, it's the gentle covering of young wood. Everything is soft and smooth. The scent suits a suit but also a checkered flannel shirt. It's more of a men's fragrance, subtle and soothing. It would also be welcome in a professional setting, as it is not overpowering but still present. I would gift it to a dear special person to enjoy together.

“She also considered very seriously what she would look like in a little cottage in the middle of the forest, dressed in a melancholy gray and holding communion only with the birds and trees"
- A.A. Milne, Once on a Time

Wow, not exactly what one expects from the fragrance pyramid at the beginning, immediately a spicy-greenish-misty mood, aromatic grasses, a few small lit wood shavings, leaning more towards conifers, a subtle hint of incense even, the citrus notes are present, but also leaning more towards a tea mood, grated peels, some already dried and poured with an Earl Grey. The pink pepper is also present and nicely spicy.

10-15 minutes in and the cedar becomes stronger, it gets even more forest-green, a truly fresh earth spreads out, which I find nice and quite special. Cardamom comes out more and beautifully dry, but the pepper and citrus peels remain pleasantly subtle even into the 30 minutes, creating a nice transition.

In the drydown, it continues with a lot of vetiver, the slightly smoky aspect fades away, patchouli gives an almost leathery dryness and in the end, during the last 1-2 skin-close hours, it takes on a nearly dark tobacco & hemp direction, very nice.

Overall a very nicely green-dry fragrance, pleasing, has a certain development, although the core from 1h-3h is very consistent, it’s not like with some fragrances where you find something new every time you sniff. But it doesn’t need that either. Good stuff, moving to the extended wish list.

Sillage/Projection solid, but nothing more.

A fascinating vetiver scent.
Very nice notes of hesperides. The transition to the heart notes is perfect, woody-smoky. Always something green.

Dark, cool, and classic, a very naturally elegant scent. Woody and earthy to my nose. The name Malachitgrau is perfectly chosen.

My favorite. Spicy, fresh orange, vetiver with a hint of smoke, grounded with wood + a bit of patch. And isn’t there leather in there?
