Soap by Energizer
It's been a tough day. I come home from work expecting some respite, but nay, it's time to go to the gym. Sure enough, the fragrance that I sprayed on this morning has long since evaporated, but there's no time to apply another before I hastily wolf down a protein bar, sling my gym bag over my shoulder and head out the door. The drive is uneventful - dreary if anything - and my workout even more so; although it does give me a little boost by the time the clock strikes 19:00.

As I head back into the locker room, the showers are already full of steam and emitting the unmistakable odour of a thousand-and-one bars of soap, a smattering of body washes and perhaps a shampoo or two. It's certainly not unpleasant, but neither alluring nor memorable. It's simply the smell of....well, cleanliness I guess. And without a second thought, I strip off my damp vestments and disappear into the steam.

By now, if you've spent any amount of time watching fragrance enthusiasts describe the scent of citrus aquatics online, you've probably grown tired of phrases like "fresh and clean" and "fresh out of the shower" - barely cliche idioms that actually describe habituated associations rather than the smells themselves. However, despite treating these kinds of hollow remarks with little more than a passive smirk, never before have the words "fresh out of the shower" had more meaning for me than when I smelled Jeremy Lin's for him.

In short, it's the smell of a highly aromatic soap teeming with orangy aquatic nuances on a backbone of thin, spicy musk. More than that, it's less of a gel than it is a hard, brisk soap BAR, freshly lathered onto wet skin in the shower and wafting through the bathroom doors long after you've towelled off and left. By no means is it a complex scent, neither does it bring up images of moisturized formulas, Ivory, Dove or....remember those old brown bars that were like sandpaper back in the 80s? Bleh.

No, Jeremy Lin for him is as cold and clean as they come - a modern, blue flavour of Irish Spring with a vineer of synthetic crystal glass. If it was meant for the basic, keen young athlete, full of energy yet not quite up to wearing Acqua di Gio (ironically the gold standard of basic fragrances), then I'd say it's a wild success.

The fragrance starts off with a massive blast of synthetic aromatics. Among them is an unmistakable orange note, along with a dash of nutmeg on an aquatic backbone. The crazy thing is, that despite its simplicity, the blend is actually quite good and projects like no aquatic I've ever experienced. Thanks to the miriad of spices, the volatility is off the charts - almost piercing, and really helps to give the fragrance a transparent lustre in the opening.

The orange continues into the mid, where an uber synthetic, yet astoundingly clean vetiver becomes noticeable, mixing well with the nutmeg. The mint, amber and woods never become apparent to my nose, yet there definitely is a touch of dry sweetness in the drydown. Three hours in, the orange disappears and what's left is a crystal clean, incensy vetiver-musk that could literally be the newborn child of today's Terre d'Hermes. Turned into a soap of course.

Projection is fantastic for the first 2 hours and total longevity (including the musk) is about 8-9, well above par for a freshie. And this was perhaps the most surprising bit. Whereas most cheap citrus aquatics start off smelling hesperidic (grapefruit mostly), move into a floral or fruity mid and finish with boring woods, this one remains soapy from start to finish and clean as a baby's bottom. Moreover, long after the others have expired by the 4 hour mark, this one just seems to keep going and going and going....it's really quite something. The Energizer bunny would be envious.

But all in all, at its core it's still a basic, forgettable spicy aquatic that just smells like soap. The performance is great and the development is even mildly interesting, but I'm not sure I would recommend it for the 15+ year olds as a stand-out fragrance. Shame it's a limited release actually, because at this price you might even get away with using it as a substitute for bathing and no one would think you're trying to cover up the smell with cologne. LOL No jokes. Fresh and clean. And most notably, straight out of the shower.
