Attract attention at all costs or artistic unicum?
S&M in the bottle. Hardly sprayed on, it whips you in the face with immense hardness. Something old-fashioned and animalistic. I sprayed it in the evening and in the morning after my shower I almost panicked because I could still smell it and had to go to the office. Really unique for a Rose Oud but more for cozy evenings at home. Do you know that feeling when you have fragrances that you find somehow interesting (good or bad) but you only wear them at home? This is one of them. The vibe is somewhere between Kouros and Fars with hints of Al-Khat and Arabian King. I'm definitely too introverted for that one. To attract attention at all costs or an artistic unicum?

Cardamom heavy Oud
This perfume has been a huge mystery to me since it was released but not because it would have been difficult to understand but I just can't decide if I like it or not.

I like that dense Oud which is there but somehow it feels unpolished and sharp. This blend is very spicy, mostly Cardamom heavy and from time to time it feels like smelling that spice straight away from the spice jar. Oud with Cardamom is not my favourite combination, I love when Cardamom is combined with florals. Later, when all those spices start to soften, Oud is accompanied with Lavender which is very weak but since it's not my favourite herb it pushes through into my nose. The whole concoction is utterly fresh and somewhat green, I like much more softer and velvety texture. On the other hand I like a lot when Oud is animalic but this Oud is not - at least for me. I love different kind of Rose Ouds as well but it's impossible to find here a whiff of a rose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in overall, sometimes it feels that the combination of Oud and roses is overdone. Oud 31 has something else to offer.

Personally I think that Oud 31 would be more enjoyable if there was just a hint more sweetness from Vanilla. Anyway I always love Oud together with some sweet notes or fruits even if it would animalic or even barnyardy otherwise. Finally after wearing my decant I'm sure that this scent is not for me but if you love very spicy Oud I recommend you to try this one. I would say that this is on the masculine side. Just to give you a perspective which are totally unisex imo I mention Elevation , Khanjar , "Kemi | Kemi / Al Kimiya" and even "'Ilm | Kemi / Al Kimiya" .

Thank you for reading, I hope you liked my review and it was helpful.

Oriental market hustle and bustle in Spanish view
Faraway countries in memories
Built from dreams
Wishes for wanderlust
Mediterranean touches

Desert ships on the market
A touch of heat
An animalistic flash
Cooling spices
Cold rose water
Thawed roses

The sea not far away
Fresh breezes float through
Green leaves float
A touch of saltiness, a touch of sweetness
Quickly the animalism fades
Powdery interspersed
Dark woods at the market stalls

Oud 31 is now the long-awaited first release by Kai Porten. Due to the change from Duftanker/MGO to Christian Carbonnel, I could almost guess in which direction it will go, without going into the further circumstances. Yes, it is unmistakably a Carbonnel fragrance, as you know it, because the DNA fits perfectly into the picture of his creations and you can also recognise a small part of Nefs in Oud 31. That may not be wrong, because this way it is clearly more suitable for the masses.
But I wanted to approach it with an open mind and perhaps be positively surprised.

The animalic floods that some people are talking about can only be perceived on my skin and in my nose in the first minute. It goes straight into an iced rose, cooling spice and light breezes. This makes it less special than I had suspected. I mainly detect cardamom and certain green notes. The spiciness flashes a little sweetness in the first few minutes and slowly warms up. The fresh impression comes through quite airy and light and is reinforced by the green aromas.

Gradually, the fragrance becomes warmer, sweeter and also more floral, moving in a more feminine direction and out of my field of pleasant fragrances.

The base is determined on my skin by a light woody note and slightly powdery musk.

The question now is, is it too simple or mass-produced or do you find the creation exciting and new. To be fair, it has a really good balance and no note comes too far to the fore. However, it is too unspectacular for me, as it doesn't seem far removed from Carbonnel's other works. For me, it simply lacks something special, new or differentiated, where Carbonnel dares to do something new and doesn't go down the same old path.

It's just a Carbonnel fragrance. They are always well balanced, always wearable, always quite deep, but never something really new or special.

I'll still try it on my neck more often, but I'm still crying over a missed DNA opportunity.

And regardless of the fact that perfumes are luxury goods and I don't deny that natural raw materials have also found their place here. But I just have to voice the same issue. For a Carbonnel fragrance, that's just too much dough. Nefs is certainly more of a rip-off, although the fragrance is good, but for a sweet-floral DNA that smells like that for hours, it's not enough creative art for me. Personally, it's just too close to the mass market, although Kai has become known as a connoisseur of the deepest niche.

From there:
Oriental thought
Spanish made
Unspectacularly brought

I am number 47 of 200
Since the beginning of my journey through the world of beautiful fragrances, I have been following Kai Porten's channel on YouTube. I got to know him as a friend of oriental scents, the hitmaker of bad boys, the dark companions, of course initially not personally, but only through his videos.

He on the side of men and Leni on the side of women quickly became for me those who actually know a lot about perfumes and who also have a real talent for conveying that knowledge to their followers in a way that captivated me so much that I was firmly convinced: These are the two on YouTube who really know what they're talking about.

I had the opportunity to witness Kai Porten's first attempt to create and market "his own fragrance." I and 199 other colleagues had the chance to participate in a first pre-sale about - I can't remember exactly - a year ago, which started on some day at 6:00 PM. I had saved this date in my phone's calendar because I absolutely wanted to be one of those first 200 privileged people who could purchase the scent of the perfume guru on YouTube.

I remember this so well because I was at Internorga in Hamburg that day. A friend of mine is the "director" of a hotel in the Bonn area. He attends Internorga every year and always combines this trade fair date with a meal at Tim Mälzer's, which I have been happy to join for a few years now. Even though this isn't really relevant here. A meal at Tim Mälzer's in the Bullerei is definitely one of the highlights of my leisure activities.

Long story short, I placed my order exactly at 6:03 PM that day and was as happy as a clam when I received a corresponding order confirmation.

What happened next, most of you probably know as well. There was a falling out with his original perfumer, and the matter dragged on for unforeseen lengths.

But Kai Porten wouldn't be Kai Porten if he had thrown in the towel at this point, refunded the pre-order customers their money, and filed the whole thing away as an extremely bad experience. No, without me being able to go into details now, he managed to find a new perfumer, reorganize his things, and keep his customers engaged.

A really good idea was to hold meet & greets to get to know his pre-order customers and explicitly give them the opportunity to test "his" fragrance. One of these meetings took place in Cologne at the perfumery Möltgen, and I also participated in that. There, I got to know Kai personally and found him to be a very likeable and goal-oriented young man (I must be about twice his age, I was definitely the senior there).

And now, slowly but surely, I come to the point: I got to sniff a scent strip with Oud 31 for the first time. I remember well that I didn't like the opening. They spoke of an animalic opening, but I thought at the time, it's actually more cheesy than animalic, and to be honest, I didn't like it.

However, the fragrance took a significant turn on that beautiful day in Cologne, and I remember that the "cheese" disappeared and made way for a - and now I'm a bit unsure - woody, dry scent. I am not good at breaking down fragrance notes when I smell a perfume. But I know what I like and what I don't like. I didn't like the opening, but the subsequent development made me smell the scent strip over and over again. I know that Oud 31, after the animalic aspect had fled, pleased me very much.

It's important to mention at this point that the fragrance I smelled in Cologne had a fragrance oil concentration of 25% (I'm slightly unsure about this as well). Later on, it was announced that "they" had increased the fragrance oil concentration again and that this measure had changed the fragrance in such a way that the "cheesy" aspect was now gone.

So, yesterday number 47 of 200 arrived at my place, and I must say, I am quite disappointed. The opening is still cheesy, nothing has disappeared, and the worst part is that it takes quite a while for this extremely unpleasant scent accord to leave. I have to - and I'm really only speaking for myself - muster a lot of courage to endure this opening in order to experience the supposedly beautiful development afterward.

Of course, I tried it, and the development comes, as it should, but what I smell later has nothing to do with the fragrance I smelled in Cologne. It makes a complete 180-degree turn and really becomes "beautiful." It becomes sparkling sweet, somewhat lovely, and strongly reminds me of Midsummer Dream by Roja Parfums. Undoubtedly a great fragrance, but actually too feminine for me. I once participated in a sharing of Midsummer Dream and had a 10 ML decant sent to me. It's almost full because, unfortunately, the fragrance is not for me.

And so, unfortunately, Oud 31 also fails for me. And to be honest, I didn't expect that at all, and somehow I now feel guilty because I would have preferred to let Kai Porten, whom I greatly appreciate, know that he has hit the nerve of the times with his fragrance - at least mine - and created something that didn't exist before.

I don't understand what happened. Theoretically, my scent memory is playing tricks on me, but I don't believe that. I know that I liked Oud 31 very much in Cologne - apart from the opening. I was really looking forward to the bottle, but now, yes now I don't really know what I'll do with it. I will definitely try it a few more times, but I think my current impression will not change.

One thing I must definitely mention in closing. I showed the fragrance to a friend. She also applied it, and from a distance of about two meters, I found it fantastic on her, no joke. It really smelled wonderful. At this point, I don't understand the world anymore and conclude that the fragrance is extremely complex and presents itself differently in different situations.

But I wear perfume primarily for myself and not for my surroundings. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether he and I can still become good friends.

Kouros Orientale..
First of all, a few words about longevity & sillage:
I came across a sample of Oud 31 about a week ago through some roundabout ways (very, very dark ways ;) ), so I can already say something informed about the topic of H&S.
When I first sprayed the fragrance on my wrist, I must have also hit the sleeve of my sweater. Today, after 5 days and a wash, the carnival of Rio de Janeiro is still going strong on that sleeve.
Strong H/S is therefore more than given. However, I also belong to those, like Kai himself if I remember correctly from his videos, who do not celebrate an overly exuberant H/S that much.

About the fragrance itself:
Even after 5-6 days, I still haven't been able to form an opinion. It has hints of Arabian King in my opinion, but it does not copy it at all.
This is probably because both fragrances work with oud, rose, and iris.
The mentioned iris makes Oud 31 rather pleasantly soapy after a fruity-animalic start. The rose soon joins in. But there is also something "human" about it, which makes it very interesting for me, but also less pleasing.
The quality and high-quality ingredients increasingly come to the surface, and the fragrance becomes rounder and denser after about half an hour.
The freshness that some have already attributed to Oud 31, I cannot confirm for myself. At least on my skin, it is not as lively as other oud fragrances from Carbonell. However, this does not make it worse or better than fragrances that I perceive as "more lively."

Opinion:
To be honest, although I somewhat know Kai Porten's "taste" from his videos and know that he likes the extreme orientals, I still expected a fragrance from him that is more geared towards pleasantness
than Oud 31.
For that, I give him my recognition and my incomprehension at the same time.
Because pleasant in the sense of an OfG or even an Alex 2 (another perfumer) is not what Oud 31 is.
Due to the already mentioned and described dryness, the fragrance has something rather reserved and perhaps also "old-fashioned."
(Although H/S, as already mentioned, is brutal)
So, there’s nothing that would make mothers start hiding their daughters from the wearer. Rather, it’s more that mothers would hide their mothers from the wearer...

Conclusion:
For me, Oud 31 is a very intriguing fragrance because it is quite animalic and at times also very "human," paired with the soapiness.

Tendentially, I don’t like Oud 31 as a fragrance so far. I hope this changes and that I find access to it after all.
This is also why I made the association with Kouros in my title for this review. Because I also find Kouros, despite all its animality, to be very soapy, and I don’t like it either. Nevertheless, I have had it in my collection for a quarter of a century.

I wish Kai, as a member of this community and one of us, no less success than YSL with Kouros.

P.S.: Because it might be, for whatever reason, somehow about more than just the fragrance itself:
MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR !
