Sangue Morlacco (Morlacco’s Blood)
“Obtained from Marasca cherry juice, we are told that this liqueur was named ‘Sangue Morlacco’ (Morlacco’s Blood) by the Italian poet and soldier, Gabriele d’Annunzio, in honor of the Morlacchi, fierce Dalmatian warriors who fought for the Republic of Venice and defended their homeland against the Turks.” This is an intensely flavoured alternative to cherry brandy.
I think Olfactory Lab’s Cherry Pop brand is, based on the name alone, obviously inspired by a perfume close to the Lost Cherry Eau de Parfum fragrance. And it does an outstanding job. It is not only cheaper but also has excellent performance. Cherry liqueur, almond and other gourmand notes blend together in its syrupy goodness. The keynotes are cherries, pistachios and tonka beans. I can relate this essence to a cherry candy filled with almond syrup.

Cherry Pop opens with a cloud of boozy edge, not from the booze but from a liqueur with a Kirsch-like mixed drink quality to the start, which I likened to a kind of Orzata Fabbri flavouring. It has an intense floral scent dominated by the unmistakable aroma of cherry with some musk underneath. A slight marzipan flavour stands out. The smell on the first spray is vital; however, not too strong or headache-inducing. Courtesy of sweet ruby black cherries and black cherries and pistachio seeds, the initial phase is all about a syrupy cherry sort of flavour along with almondy pistachio flavours. Noteworthy, the pistachio fruit is a drupe containing an elongated seed, which is the edible part. The seed, commonly considered a nut, has a mauve-coloured skin and light green pulp with a characteristic bitter taste. My skin amplifies the bitterness of the seeds. Instead, blotting paper is all about candied cherries.

A floral blend of carnal white flowers, jasmine and gardenia, and pistachio seeds joins the syrupy, sweet and alcoholic initial mix of cherries. Now, a surrounding essence comes across as marzipan, with green pistachios substituting for the milky almonds. Sometimes I feel the pistachio hazelnut closer to the almond extract. The sudden emergence and central prominence of the flowers are essential for another reason: it defuses and weakens the strength of the amaretto, although there is still more than enough to get a central accord of cherry, amaretto and vanilla oozing from the bottom. Finally, jasmine evens the playing field, offering a more masculine and lingering musky element.

Although the initial blush of the fragrance is almost candy-like, it mellows into something more musky and earthy. The final phase is warm with hints of balsamic and slightly earthy Balsam of Peru, whose dense resinousness emerges later, a touch of creamy vanilla and an overdose of toasted tonka. What lingers on my skin is the mix of ripe, juicy, sticky, luscious cherries sprayed with a generous amount of alcoholic amaretto liqueur and equally alcoholic vanilla, then lightly sprinkled with a hint of resinousness. Vanilla appears out of nowhere, smelling more alcoholic than regular sugary vanillin but also more alcoholic than #Olfactory Lab Vanilla. Not mentioned, on the finish, the white musk clean as laundry makes its way overbearing, covering the other notes, minimizing them and transforming everything into a haze.

It is still unclear whether the perfume is linear or changeable. Most changes are so incremental that they are hard to notice at first glance and in a single test. What is certain is that the perfume follows two different paths on the skin, with sweet and fruity accents, and on the strip of paper, where bitter and greenish scents prevail. Cherry Pop doesn’t skimp on performance, will last more than half a day, and has a solid sillage. The ridiculous price offers a great budget alternative to Ford’s expensive Lost Cherry. It is a good option for late and evening events, parties, dates and dinners, and it should be during the fall and winter when you can wrap yourself up in your cosiest clothes and this cosy fragrance.

I'm basing my sensations on a bottle I've owned since May 2023.

It explodes like a boozy shot of Cherry liqueur, but the bitter pistachio backbone is dominant, supported by balsamic coumarins. Excellent!
