Golden Cologne Soap
Orange blossom and neroli are two extraordinary ingredients I instantly recognize in fragrances. Neroli is produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree, which is the same blossom that the sweet orange blossom comes from. While they are similar scents, Neroli has more of a sweet floral aroma. I love them, but I have a strange relationship with them. Sometimes I love them; other times, I hate them. Presumably, it depends on the additional notes they couple with them.
Olfactory Lab Neroli is a citrus-floral-musky scent reminiscent of the Italian southern gardens featuring citrus trees. Zagare, orange blossom, lemon blossom, and neroli aromas linger in the air during the blooming season. Neroli bloom has a fresh, floral, and citrus scent profile that is light and relaxing. Imagine taking a deep breath under a citrus tree in the countryside. The small white flowers of the tree are hand-gathered in the springtime, harvested, and transformed into redolent oil. This cologne belongs to the “eau de cologne” fragrance and begins with a riot of bitter orange flowers and citrus juices. I get both the bright bergamot and sweet orange, and I will not exclude a tinge of sparkling lemon. The fragrance at first is very tart and almost spicy, and it smells like the orange blossom water used in cooking. Fresh, awakening, wide, like a splash of cold water on my face.
In the middle, a liqueur myrtle adds a boozy kick to the scent, and the neroli stands out with a bitter-spicy aroma which is more noticeable later. The citrus rind zestiness was the most conspicuous note before the neroli entered my nostrils. The perfume’s alcohol drench the dark green leaves and create a boozy and leafy nuance. Now the scent leans towards a noticeable floral and soapy quality. I can't help by liken this aroma to the classic Atkinsons Golden Cologne Soap, that with a bright yellow packaging.
All the notes encountered so far rest on a slightly salty and musky base. The citrus subsides more, but it never goes away to become a musky fragrance. I love the musky slant of the ambrette seeds, but miserably they aren’t dominant here. I adore the way is shows up in Vibrant Leather Warm, Accord N°3 Woody, or Pompelmo ed Agrumi. Salted amber and animal musk prevail over everything else. The former is more salty than sweet, does not have a marine slant but helps to warm it up. And the white musk (I don't see oakmoss or evernia prunasti among the ingredients) helps prolonguing the longevity with a pure and clean touch to it.
Neroli is best suited for summer due to its soft, savory scent, light florals, and tart citrus. It’s simple, but that’s why it’s unique. Projection-wise, it’s pretty fair to moderate. It’s not the bomb, but you will notice it for the first few hours with a decent amount of application. Hence, it sits pretty close to the skin. In fact, it’s damn good for any day you want to smell good and clean, ideal for the office or a party. Unpretentious and without wishing to be an imitation, Neroli shares many aspects with Echt Kölnisch Wasser Eau de Cologne to give you an idea. I even compared with Bright Neroli, which is darker and more aromatic, so two scents apart.
I'm basing my feelings on a bottle I have owned since May 2023.
