Grafschafter Goldsaft in a Bottle

I’m going to try my hand at a review for this extremely exciting and unique fragrance. Treacle certainly polarizes and is not something you would typically sniff in everyday perfumery. However, it completely captivates me!

Yes, I would also wish for sunshine and 30 degrees - it’s early August after all - but for days now, I’ve been enjoying the cool weather in terms of scent, and I was particularly looking forward to Treacle by Pineward. It catapults me back to my childhood in the Eifel. Breakfast at my grandparents' house. There was always sugar beet syrup or "Sehm" as it’s called here in the region.

Before I dive into the scent, one thing in advance. If you ever get the chance to test the fragrance, definitely apply a spritz to your wrist (caution: it leaves stains!) and please do not test it on scent strips. On paper, the smoke dominates quite unpleasantly, and you get a completely false impression of the fragrance.

I bought a 37ml bottle from Pineward, and since two spritzes are enough, it should last me until retirement. The order from the USA went smoothly and, although it wasn’t cheap (shipping/customs), it’s currently sold out everywhere else.

Anyway, the scent is super exciting, and I’m glad I can finally wear it.

Overall, the fragrance is quite linear, and you get a very consistent scent profile throughout. Yes, the scent is sweet, smoky, and clearly features a malty molasses or sugar beet syrup in the foreground, which gains sweetness and smoothness from raisins. Lapsang and tobacco provide a smoky spiciness that adds a lot of tension to the fragrance, elevating it from dessert or spread to perfume. Personally, I don’t pick up much honey, but that’s all subjective anyway.

Longevity and sillage are well above average, and it’s certainly not a scent for spring or summer.

Overall, an extremely successful fragrance and definitely something that stands out from the crowd. Here we are in the more experimental niche, which is still very wearable.

Pineward is a small American fragrance house. They produce based on demand and do so at very fair prices.

Here’s to that, with quark and sugar beet syrup!

I actually associated it with molasses too, but also with the pleasant crackling of a cabin fire with tobacco... Beautiful scent!
