Seamus writes a letter
When Seamus sits at his old secretary in dim light, there is no time, only the warm glow of the latüchte. Then he dives through the thin threads of pipe smoke, which slowly billow under the amber-coloured lampshade, playful swirling curls, like everything around in art nouveau. Amber is also the colour of the whiskey, which glows in the glass under the light and mixes malt and peat into the sweet smoke, oak barrel and caramel
Then Seamus thinks of Shortbread, not sure if it's the glass or the thought of Gwen. Finally he bends over the table deeper, into the rich, spicy, full-bodied scent of dark red mahogany, the smell of the black desk pad, the leather that still carries the pungency of the abrasive somewhere deep inside. He had tried in vain last week to wash out the ink when, in the exuberance of rapture, the barrel had fallen over him while decorating the letters.
Finally Seamus writes, the words blowing out of his pen as if in a fever, lying down on the paper with the sweet smoke, the sharp leather, the full-bodied mahogany and the soft whiskey, like peat and malt and caramel.
Gwen will breathe it all when she inhabits his letters and then she will think of Pasticcini di Mandorle, because Seamus' shortbread will have gone through to Italian almond biscuits in her mind after only one hour, close to the letter paper for a few hours.
