Soapy vetiver
For those of you who are expecting an artisanal sprayable perfume from Sultan Pasha - this is not it.
Think in terms of vintage paper lable Roja perfumes. Share similar vibes to the attar, but not a recreation by any streach of imagination. Excelent fragrance if we look at it as a high end niche. Not so much for those who expected artisanal creation.

Soapy chypre with powerful and natural vetiver note
Again like with Narkissos I'm going well outside my comfort zone to try an aldehydic floral chypre, and again I'm pleasantly surprised.

Sharp aldehydic soapy opening leads into powdery strong orris butter, and the vetiver is what makes all of it come together. The only other vetiver I've smelled that is this strong is Sultan Vetiver; Thebes basically smells like you've rubbed vetiver oil all over your skin before applying a powdery soapy floral fragrance. Sounds weird but it somehow works.

Very long lasting and diffusive, I put this one on before bed and woke up still smelling it strongly.

Edit: The soapiness is too harsh on second wear. Lowering my rating

A journey through death into rebirth
Inspired by ancient Egyptian tombs, Thebes opens austere and visceral, think of cold stone and arid soil as you smell this perfume for the first time. As this perfume continues to develop, it will present itself to you in much greater depth than just the top, with the more subdued warm notes layered between a rich, animalistic, and dusty leather (similar to that of the leather of ancient Egyptians) above and below, whilst also revealing the ethereal beauty of florals interspersed throughout the fragrance. The result is a masterful blend of light versus darkness, juxtaposition and complex character.

Vintage style launched into the future
Thebes is a very special perfume for me. I have had the pleasure to know Sultan and enjoy many perfume experiences with him. I remember him smelling Guerlain Djedi for the first time, looking in awe and excitement: whoa, what is this?!
Sultan is daring, he smelled it and wanted to make it, not just enjoy it. This kind of fanaticism is not uncreative, it is part of studying, learning, being a student. But how do you make Djedi? Where to start? I remember Sultan making all sorts of study versions along the way: leathery ones, vetiver ones, floral ones, disgusting ones! So much trial and error.
Then one day it was over and he had made Thebes, amazing. It was so similar to Djedi, but as an oil. Achieving that must have meant a lot to Sultan, to know he could be close to his heroes, to understand the workings and juxtapositions of that great, enigmatic creation. Thebes is an incredible attar, a strange experience, a tombal experience.
With the arrival of Thebes perfume I was expecting the same homage, but as a beautiful spray. Wrong. Sultan is moving forward with big strides, is more mature, more confident, happier, less inward, more expansive. This whole collection shows it. Thebes parfum is no longer like Djedi, it is a rebirth, an exciting new day full of life, no more the beautiful gloom. This perfume is uplifting (maybe still strange to some), full of life, almost fun.
Everything is new: the decrepit leather is now spiffy, the dustiness is jolly, the vetiver is alive, sweet flowers replace sinister flowers... Is this the smell of the afterlife? I hope so.

Orris scent standing on legs of something adjacent to a western oud accord, light touches of vetiver, strong kephalis/leafy feel.

Iris with aromatic and earthy nuances. Complex and delicate at the same time.
A blast from the past

The only fragrance in the collection that is somewhat interesting. However, it is definitely not a candidate for a full bottle.

This is one of the most sophisticated soapy perfume probably ever made, so many been made in this Genre and yet this is another level.

Scent of vetiver, a bit of florals, powder, and... a synthetic base that stings my nose. The attar is much better. Spray is disappointment.

Vetiver Solitaire, where the bright notes are unfortunately buried under heaps of vetiveryl acetate. I don't find any aldehydes or animalic notes.

First impression - BAH! 30 minutes on paper, then straight to the skin. Hector is right, it's really just vetiver but so much more!

Actually just vetiver. With a lot of goodwill, a bit of iris, but that's it. Has nothing to do with the brilliant attar.
