Now Troye…

Now I love Troye Sivan, and I will continue to love him. That being said, this scent is a letdown.

In theory I love what this scent is about. Cozy, soft, woody, slightly sexy. Unfortunately, I just get an overpowering dose of rubber immediately upon spraying this. I think it’s coming from the leather accord, it’s this strange tire shop thing that doesn’t seem intentional.

What’s sad is that there is a really great scent in here!! The woods are slightly rough, powdery, and the dry down is actually quite nice after an hour!

But unfortunately the scent is dominated by this really unpleasant rubbery leather accord that doesn’t work for me or the other people I’ve shown this scent to.

Big Crush

This smells like Jo Malone's wood sage and sea salt but sweatier. In the best way. Like I want my boyfriend to wear this every day. It's a groggy, peppery leather mixed in with some sweetness. Like tangled sheets where one sleeper wore a rough, spicy wood scent and the other a gentle cardamom scent. Quite a perfect mix of comforting and sexy.

More than the sum of its parts

I’ll be honest: I wasn’t terribly interested in testing this. But the Tsu Lange Yor custom discovery set comes with three samples, and I’d already picked Sala and Pool , so I figured why not throw in one that’s less up my alley.

I’m so glad I did.

Reading the notes, I was worried this would be too harsh but it’s surprisingly soft and welcoming.

The crisp pepper quickly fades as a very gentle leather steps in to hold hands with the warm cardamom. Over the next half hour the scent continues to deepen and evolve, becoming more resinous and woody, with a tender hint of frankincense smoke.

There are no sharp edges to this fragrance — every note is soft and rounded, blending smoothly into the next. Overall there is something peacefully intimate and almost dreamy about it, like snuggling up to a lover’s neck, half asleep.

While composed of traditionally masculine notes, I consider it unisex. I’d wear it any time of the year but suspect it really sings in the fall. Projection and sillage are moderate.

Tsu Lange Yor continues to surprise me its fragrance compositions, which are more nuanced and thoughtful than I would necessarily expect from a celebrity house.

Don’t judge a fragrance by its pyramid

Wowww this stuff is gorgeous. I had purchased the Tsu Lange Yor discovery set and By Your Side (their newest release) was included as an unanticipated bonus. It was a happy accident that I ended up liking this one the best and am seriously considering a full bottle.

Unisex, leaning ever so slightly masculine. To my nose, a smoky, slightly leathery Tam Dao - which is odd indeed because there’s no sandalwood listed! But it possesses this inexplicable creamy quality despite the top and middle composition being dominated by thoroughly un-creamy notes.

I’m typically not a huge fan of leather and labdanum - in fact, I usually go out of my way to avoid these two, especially in conjunction with each other. I was expecting something rugged, abrasive, and unflinchingly masculine but what I got was something peaceful, understated, and androgynous. Meditative almost. Like you caught a whiff of someone’s leather jacket as they passed you on a walk through the woods. Really goes to show that you can’t always reliably judge a fragrance by its note composition alone.

Up close (like sniffing it directly off your wrist) it might get a smidge strong if you’re super sensitive to notes like these. But at an arm’s length or sprayed on the back of the neck, this stuff really sings. I find it’s best consumed in random wafts, and not in a sustained, right-under-the-nose stream.

All told, this isn’t your typical celebrity fragrance offering. It’s extraordinarily unique, and I get the sense a lot of thought and care was put into its formulation. And just as a little aside, if you get the discovery set like I did, all the sample sprayers have caps! I haven’t come across that before. A little embellishment like that is a signifier of overall quality that I really appreciate in a house.
