When did one bottle fits all become the new thing?

When did one bottle fits all become the new thing?

As a devoted fragrance collector over the past >decade, I’m honestly sad to see the ‘new’ luxury fragrance houses creating a trend of pouring all of their different scents into the same bottle and slapping different yet interchangeable labels on them. Diptique, Jo Malone London, Le Labo, BYREDO. What happened to the art of packaging? I understand that less is more and it’s all about the scent and bladibla, but man, it’s just so boring.

Part of the reason why I’m hesitant to buy from some of these brands is exactly that: it totally lacks personality. My favourite fragrances I’ve often found because of their bottles. The Luna Rossas would’ve most likely never caught my interest in the slightest had they all been in a ridiculously anonymous bottle. I wanted to press the atomizer because the design was something special. I was intrigued by my dad’s Salvador Dali Pour Homme aftershave as a kid because of the crazy bottle first, the scent second. When at a store, I test out the fragrances that catch my eye first, not the ones that have that “quiet luxury” (barf) look to them and all look the same.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m super into several of the above mentioned brands’ fragrances, but I would’ve never ever known had it not been for my wife and her obsession with trends, TikTok and minimalistic aesthetic or whatever it’s called these days.

Part of owning a cool collection is having a shelf or 10 full of little sculptures. Where’s the fun when those collections slowly just turn into an archive instead, a boring database of things you like the smell of, but you have to make sure to sort them alphabetically or you won’t know what you’re gonna smell like today. It’s sad. SAD.

That’s all.

A beautiful bottle is definitely part of my purchasing decision. Whilst I can appreciate a good minimalist design the glut of plain bottles really goes to show that simplicity is one of the most difficult themes in art to pull off.
When you see the different types of scent bottles through history you feel so much personality & place through them, I fear the mass manufactured aesthetic of today will say nothing good about our current cultural moment.

I can feel you. I love me a great bottle as well. What’s your nicest bottle?

Is for sure my Salvador Dali Pour Homme. I love all the Dali bottles tbh. What’s yours? Can always use inspiration from a fellow bottle appreciator
