Lotte’s top 10 tips in perfume collecting

  1. I will start with what I regard to be the most important tip: it’s not every scent you ‘like’ that you need to own, and it’s not every fragrance you ‘appreciate’ that needs to become a part of your collection.
  2. This tip feeds off and is consequent to the 1st tip: whatever you buy needs to work for you. Before you make a purchase, that fragrance needs to have a spot in your collection it can be stored in, and a place in your perfume wearing habit that it can slot into seamlessly. Don’t buy a fragrance and then decide what to do with it or when to wear it, later. Think before acting.
  3. Remember that no collection stays stagnant. Your lifestyle will change, your hormones will change, your preferences will change, and so your perfume choices will consequently change. Keep that in mind before making costly purchases, or purchasing the full bottle of a fragrance the 1st time around.
  4. Know your base notes. No matter the operatic performance of the top and middle notes, what you will be left with most of the time, are the base notes. Know what you like and what you can’t live with in a dry down.
  5. Approach fragrance testing as a science, not an art. Be detailed and analytical in your testing, not impassioned and hasty.
  6. Train your nose by sniffing and taking the time to isolate notes as a fragrance develops from the opening to the base.
  7. Don’t give up on a fragrance at the first sniff. If you don’t like the top notes, you may forgive them once you experience the mid and base notes so come back to the fragrance after a minute away.
  8. Enjoy the thrill. One of the best things about building a collection, is the thrill of the chase. Enjoy it, but don’t become a servant to it.
  9. Build up a list of notes you like in fragrances as you experience more scents. In this effort, do your best to explore- try to get your nose on different sorts of scent profiles. But remember, nothing is set in stone when it comes to fragrances. You might not appreciate honeysuckle as a standalone note, but you might enjoy a fragrance that has it in there.
  10. As far as you’re able, avoid blind buying. But if it cannot be avoided, give yourself a monthly limit and fine yourself by making a hefty charity donation, if you do not honour that limit.
