Structured Review: 40 Knots -- Xerjoff

40 Knots by Xerjoff has no listed notes, but its commonly cited similarity to Ambre Nuit caught my attention. After wearing it a couple times and revisiting it, I decided I wanted to write up my thoughts again. Below, I'll go through my experience and description of it, the presentation, the performance, and finally my recommendation.

SUMMARY: Salty, Woody, Mineral

OVERVIEW: The opening smells like thinly sliced green apple, sprinkled with cinnamon spice and a thin drizzle of honey, served in a freshly-carved wooden bowl. Maybe there’s a hint of salty sea air, but it’s distant. On my skin, a sharp mineral quality emerges and lingers. After some hours, it dries down to a smooth woods and amber, with some background musky qualities. The honey-cinnamon apple transitions into a salted lime accent; the wooden bowl is now freshly polished.

PRESENTATION: It’s got this little infinity loop on the bottle, which I think is a great touch. Beautiful bottle, hefty cap, nice presentation.

PERFORMANCE: On my skin, this sharp mineral quality lingers for quite a while. The drydown is nice, indeed reminiscent of Ambre Nuit to me, but once I reach that stage it only lasts about an hour and a half. Overall this fragrance lasts ~6 hours for me. Projects moderately.

RECOMMENDATION: Personally, I did not enjoy this fragrance. Some may experience 40 Knots quite differently than I did, however, so as with every fragrance, I would recommend testing it yourself. Give it at least a couple wears -- with the lack of notes, it can be hard to discern what is going on, and the first time I wore it was quite a confusing experience; by the third wear, I knew what my nose expected and felt I could properly assess whether I liked it or not. I still revisited it a couple times -- the drydown is what got me -- but ultimately, that sharp mineral note drove me away.
