Last weekend I braved a wet Winter's day in Melbourne to travel to trendy Gertrude St, where you can find flâner's flagship store, hemmed in by Le Labo & Aēsop. flâner's been around for a couple of years now & is something of an institution to the people of Gertrude st, but it hasn't yet made big waves on the int'l fragrance scene. Something that might change with their soon to open London store. Talking to the brand leader Dave, (wonderful person, very easy to chat to, full of information & ready to break down all the scents for you,) I found out that the brand is owned by an ER nurse at one of the local hospitals, who specialises in paliative care there. Apparently around people who are ventilated you can't wear certain perfumes due to the ingredients not playing nice with the system, so all of fláner's fragrances are safe to wear in a hospital setting. Something I've never really considered, but when thought about makes a lot of sense. On to the fragrances themselves.flâner believes in riding the line between niche appeal & accessibility, & I feel they do so successfully. When some brands go for accessibility or mass market appeal they lose personality & interest, all the edges are sanded off for an easy to swallow product. Not so for flâner. Whilst not every scent of their 9 was an absolute banger, I feel like there's something for everyone there. My cousin & her boyfriend who came along with me enjoyed
Vive la Fleur &
Under the Rose respectively, but to me there were a few stand outs.I tried two on skin:
Fiesta del Agave was a lovely fresh, green, herbal scent, an evocative lime & tamarind opening, to an almost smoky agave-chili-marigold complex then an oakmoss forward dry down that retained most of the character of the heart.
Manhattan Cherry started with an edible maraschino, a burst of orange zest, which filled out a bittersweet vermouth accord. From there whiskey predominated, the acetones fading to the barrel woods, which lingered throughout the dry down.Of the scents I didn't try on skin the one that most impressed me & my cousin was
Sonic Silver - inspired by Melbourne's tram lines, it had an aromatic, metallic character that wasn't off putting in the slightest. Sage & lavender filled out the scent. It's perhaps the most "niche" of flâner's offerings, but the fundamentals are really there. We both kept coming back to sniff the sample. I really want to try it on skin as well. I could go on, but a discovery set is a safe purchase & you can explore for yourself! In sum, visiting the flagship is a lovely time, & if you're ever in Melbourne I really recommend visiting, there's plenty to see on Gertrude st. I pressed Dave for some info on upcoming fragrances, & he let slip a Citrus forward scent was in the works, so look forward to new offerings from flâner in the near future!Forgive my poor photography of the store :)
