I learned this lesson the hard way at the salon de parfum recently. After suffering for months under the tyranny of a troll whom I was trying to pacify and socialize, I finally let him go. Only now has my peace returned.

Just say "No" to trolls. No acknowledgement. No reply.

Twisted Evil

A wise decision!

With all respect, Sherapop, but your troll was a stupid one since all he did was insulting you.

The more dangerous and intelligent ones create users in perfume communities, spend a lot of time and energy to be good friends with as much people as possible, even donate money. At some point, maybe after years, when they think they have achieved a "position" they start picking at and insulting a few other users. When they finally get sacked, they leave behind a horrible mess of frustration and disappointment, and many users put the blame on the webmaster for banning such a nice person!

One of that kind was best friends with all the ladies at the German site, but he became sarcastic and disrespectful whenever a male user posted an elaborate review - and so I think I was one of his preferred victims.

I never reacted and at some point he lost interest and simply ceased to visit Parfumo.

The salon de parfum is my first blog, and to be honest, I really did not understand the troll concept. Trollman occasionally made relevant points, so I attempted to corral him into socially acceptable behavior, since I felt that he had potential to change, and his lame attempts at insults never really bothered me. (You may have noticed that I have no dearth of self-esteem. Laughing) Unfortunately, other people were bothered by his rude behavior, and that's why he became a big problem.

My real weakness, I suppose, was to feel sorry for him. Fortunately, Bryan Ross (From Pyrgos) broke down the options for me, and I finally realized that the only solution was to refuse ever to publish him again. Bryan was right, and now the salon is troll-free once again...

Very Happy

Wise move, Sherapop. I shudder to think how he would've reacted to the porn topic.

I don't know how you put up with his nonsense for so long Shera.
He would have been out on his a$$ in no time had it been my blog.
Differences of opinions are always welcome but a stinky attitude isn't.
In any case, I'm truly glad peace has returned in The Salon. x

Well, let's just say that it was a learning experience!

Control of the own website - Enforce it with a Filter 11 years ago
Well, the owner of a blog site is like the host of a party. The information and effort that goes into the articles should be appreciated by the readers (guests). When somebody misbehaves, the host can show them the door. So, on the one hand, comments on Sherapop's blog site are invited, on the other hand, who knows what could be written by just any "Dick, John and Harry" and who knows whether it is not put with the intention to troll. The method to avert that is to put in a Filter, so that the comment gets only printed after approval by the host. That keeps the control of the blog site in the hands of the host.

Some blog sites will not print the comments at all unless they are submitted by members of that particular site, and that also keeps the control in the hands of the host.

Compare that with Facebook which is an open book - literally - where the members swim around like inside a glass fish bowl.

For more than a year, the salon de parfum was "filter-free", but one person abused the privilege of open posting, so now commentators must identify themselves, and I read the comments before they are published, not after. It's not such an onerous requirement anyway, since everybody uses pseudonyms and avatars!

I agree with you: there are some people out there just looking for attention and wanting to stir up trouble for the fun of it...

Cool

So far, I think this website is a collection of the best attributes of all of the other fragrance sites I've ever visited. I love the user friendly manner in which it is organized and the professional way the database and reviews are being compiled. The webpage design is clean and uncluttered. Also, the search options are quite logical and give the serious perfumistorians (not sure if this is a word actually) several different ways to access information about fragrances. I like the fact that there is very little squabbling or gossip on the forum and people seem to be able to give their honest opinions while still remaining polite. It is very refreshing also to not see any extraneous advertising, SPAM, politics, personal attacks or the same silly topic about "how to drop somebody's panties with the right cologne". I love it here and I will recommend this site to anyone seriously interested in learning about fragrances, talking to others with the same interests and reading reviews.

Since I'm relatively new, I'll just say that I do enjoy the degree of intelligence at Parfumo. I'm not one to go from site to site socially anyway. I don't have the time and I'm not interested. I'm a blogger and I'm more interested in the documenting of perfumes for the future. I never thought of this site as cold, but I do think of the other site as more immature. I'll post my reviews on both because people need to read reviews when they're shopping, but as far as interacting in forums, I'm not one for inane games.

That's admirable of you, Sorceress. For clarification, what are the "inane games" you refer to?

When I said inane games, I was referring to posts such as, "Match The Avatar To A Perfume", "Best Frag Of Person That Posted Above You", Guess The Age Of The Person Above You", "Post Your Fabulous Collection", "Describing the Perfume Wardrobe Of The Person Above You". They're mindless games, but they can also be hurtful games too, they remind me of high school bully games. Jmho.

Oh, I never gave a thought that somebody would look at these games as hurtful or bullying!

I think we have run a few of those games as well here, namely the best/top frags of person above game. They are fun for a while but eventually people loose interest. They can be a first step to get into contact with each other, they serve as a kind of icebreaker. I I have never seen that someone who joined in felt uncomfortable about it.

It would be kind of strange if those games was all happening here, but this is not the case. So why not have a stupid little game once in a while? Nobody will be pushed to take part!

Well, the internet is accessed from the keyboard from the cozy home computer station.

It seems to me that when a person wants to be truly herself, she cannot fit into just any crowd, I mean mentally ... virtually.

So, like minds find their soulmates - wherever - and then the majority makes the climate.

The choice is easy. Stay where you like it and contribute.
