By the way, Apicius, on an unrelated note:

I've been thinking about posting a text at the salon de parfum called

"Are Perfumistas Like Porn Addicts?"

I was afraid that I might offend someone, but now that you've broken the ice, I might be able to muster up the confidence to do it! Of course, by posting the word 'porn' at my blog, my lascivious visitors will skyrocket. I already have scores of people visiting in search of "group orgy" and "prostitutes". Imagine what the naked word 'porn' would do for my stats! Perhaps before posting the article I should first monetize my blog with a link to a sex toys shop.

Okay ... WTF?????

Cats and dogs are the embodiment of innocence and pureness of spirit. Mentioning them with any connection whatsoever to human sexuality is beyond creepy. Yuck.

Maybe I'm not hip enough for this room.

And anyone who complains about the joy others take in their pets is just pathetic and sad, don't you think. How sad they must be on the inside.

Sorry to have offended you, Dulcelmio, my intention was to give an explanation what might be behind the ongoing misunderstandings.

Just to make things clear - we will not put the word "porn" on every page at Parfumo, just to increase the hits at Google Smile

When you run a blog, you are exposed already. Probably, over the years, you have "seen it all". Perhaps you can write such an article but tone down the words that - by default - create "red flags" in the computer/internet world, and then the sexy responses don't come in hoards pursuing you when you only wanted to make a statement or peacefully discuss an issue.

You never know who is lurking out there, ready to pounce on sexy content.

Don't be offended, Dulcemio. I think that Apicius was just trying to explain the extreme reactions of the cat haters. It's a bit difficult to understand--why such antipathy? So he was just offering a theory. I don't think that he is calling our furry friends porn stars or anything like that!

It just amazes me how people air out grievances they have via the platform of dogs or cats.

If it is not reviews and how they should be awarded with pokals, or photos and how they should be staged and rated,

then the fuss travels over the issue of dogs and cats.

Parfumo does not discuss politics or religion, that would be even more controversial.

But perfume ? Cats ? Dogs ?

Peace, please.

To be honest, none of it bothers me in the least. I never knew that I would learn so much about human beings by mounting a simple blog for the philosophical discussion of perfume! Now I know what all of those people are really doing when they gaze fixedly at their devices on the commute home.

There is a history before my blog 11 years ago
When I did my blog, I must have stepped into a nest of angry wasps for the furor it created. So I did not start what was already there.

Are we not free to bring up topics that are current ?

I have meanwhile stopped rating the photos altogether. Too many points are easily gathered and then it is not fair to all those who earn points with writing reviews, or handing in a new scent, or otherwise work harder at building Parfumo to what it is.

Oh boy.. whatever you do even with the best of intentions, some people are going to be offended.
Ever since starting a business I'm continuously amazed at how annoying some customers can be , expecting things I can never offer.

In any case, I happen to like the cat pictures.. sure they may not be 'crisp clear' but I think they are creative.
Sofar I've barely rated any pictures because it would be a true time suck.

I don't understand this... If I only rate pictures and write no reviews. I get Confused: Confused: Confused: amount of points. If you (for example) write reviews and rate pictures would you not get more points then I?

For a couple of days, I was rating photos as they popped up on the home page when I happened to be here. Now I've stopped. I think that we all apply completely different and often contradictory criteria, so it's meaningless.

One person's expression of creativity is another person's eye sore!

How important are points ? 11 years ago
It was mentioned several times by Apicius not to take the points too seriously.

I can only say my personal view about this: I like to garner points. It is similar to school when efforts are rewarded with good grades. Then it is like an incentive.

Or, when after many years of study, a doctor, lawyer etc. get a degree that he can hang on the wall to show for the effort.

If PARFUMO is just a social place and for some the matter of how many points they gather during their happy and friendly stay is unimportant, that is alright by me, too.

After all, we are here to have fun. Points, fine. Lots of points, fine. Just a few points, fine too.

I can affirm that your mathematical intuition is sound, Cincy!

Here's a proof:

If B > A

and

A >

A + B > A

Mathematically, that is correct. But, we are here to relax. To escape from the harshness of the real world, to talk about our favorite subject: Perfumes

If points are gathered as a result, then this is a happenstance, not a condition.

Did I phrase it right ?

Maybe do away with the points and go with an emoticon system , like 'sleeping beauty' for non-active members and versus 'caught red-handed' for people that should not spend every living hour of the day on Parfumo (or other sites) yet do.

Pipette only pointed to a seemingly unfair system where rating 8 pictures (was it 8 or even just 5) equals to writing 1 review.

I do feel slightly intimidated in having to write a substantial review. My nose is only so-so (being a beginner and allergic to dairy to boot, while still ingesting it almost daily), but I enjoy looking/digging up information left and right and try to make sense of the notes as well as get to know the history.

But regarding cats.. I thought it was funny how a few days ago, our cat started sniffing my wrist with perfume on. Since then I let her sniff my wrist more regularly. She's nearly always interested in the scent.
And.. until THIS and the other discussion came up re cat+perfume pix started to wonder whether I should start taking cat+perfume pix too (from the rare bottles I do own)

Apicius.. I can read German but that last word is cryptic! (ah, Loriot : de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosakenzipfel )
Got to brush up the language skillz!

Yes, this is the best attitude.

Pipette, I think I am in the position now that I have to ask for excuse for my fellow German parfumistas!

I would not say that you have stepped into a nest of angry wasps - you have just been exploring the German mindset - which is considerably different from Anglosaxon social rules. It seems in my country certain values in communication like honesty, straightforwardness, always say what you think are esteemed much higher than, i.e., politeness, respect, friendliness, humour which to me seem to have a higher value in the Angolsaxon world.

Due to this, it is possible that some tension can easily build up in discussions, however, only in rare cases the results are like this:

Sometimes, I intervene as a moderator and ask the participants if anybody wants to have a "Kosakenzipfel" Wink

What is wrong with spending many wonderful hours on websites that feed your passion ?

Does a pianist practice and later give concerts ?
Does an athlete practice and later compete in the Olympics ?
Does a writer write, toss, re-write, submit manuscript, get rejected and finally get published ?

I do the daily chores super fast to get back to the screen.

wrong if it interferes with WORK! Administration for the last quarter of the year should have been FINISHED already , instead of needing to get a start on it! EmbarassedRolling Eyes
