Eau Fraîche?

Eau Fraîche? 1

Every diagram of perfume concentrations I have ever seen, as well as when people talk about it on YouTube or TikTok, includes a mention of eau fraîche, which is supposedly a concentration of between 1-3% of aromachemicals. However, I've only ever come across 3 fragrances that describe themselves as "eau fraîche," Chance Eau Fraîche (Eau de Toilette)Chance Eau Fraîche Eau de Toilette, Y (Eau Fraîche)Y Eau Fraîche, and Versace Man Eau Fraîche (Eau de Toilette)Versace Man Eau Fraîche Eau de Toilette. Two of them are EDTs (I believe Chance Eau Fraîche also comes in EDP) and Y Eau Fraîche is surely a higher concentration than 1-3% as it feels like an EDT to me (~4 hour longevity, decent sillage). Have you ever come across a fragrance that is a legitimate "eau fraîche" with 1-3% concentration? If not, why do we even bother including them in diagrams?

Come to think of it, EDCs are also exceedingly rare. There are certain ancient formulas that are still EDC concentration like the original Echt Kölnisch Wasser (Eau de Cologne)Echt Kölnisch Wasser Eau de Cologne and its flankers, or Colonia (Eau de Cologne)Colonia Eau de Cologne, and probably the most famous recent example is Dior Homme Cologne (2013)Dior Homme Cologne (2013) but most perfumes advertised as "Cologne" are also EDT or EDP, such as Polo Cologne IntensePolo Cologne Intense, Enigma Parfum CologneEnigma Parfum Cologne, Aventus CologneAventus Cologne, Jo Malone's "Cologne" fragrances are all EDT, etc. Isn't it confusing to newbies to talk about "colognes" containing less than 5% concentration when it simply isn't true?

I've not come across any Eau Fraiche for guys. Regarding colognes, there's the terminology for the general public (at least in the USA) that men wear colognes and women wear perfumes. But is a cologne really an EDT most of the time? Another example is Azzaro pour Homme Cologne IntenseAzzaro pour Homme Cologne Intense which is described as an EDT on the Azzaro web site. The Old Spice web site has Old Spice "classic" only available as an eau de cologne. The Brut web site has a "splash" and an "after shave". Is after shave an Eau Fraiche concentration? The Brut splash has "long-lasting fragrance" on the bottle. Maybe it's at least a cologne concentration?

Back to Eau Fraiche - is that a thing more for the ladies? A quick google and I found an article with this list which includes one you mentioned:

Popular Eau Fraîche Fragrances For Women
CHANEL Chance Eau Fraîche
Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh
Chloe Love Story Eau Fraîche
Yves Saint Laurent Belle d’Opium Eau Fraîche
Gucci Bloom Eau de Parfum Nettare di Fiori
Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her Eau FraîcheVersace
Bright Crystal Eau Fraîche

I guess we men must need something stronger in order to cover up our guy stink. 😃

I believe historically there were only eaux de cologne and parfums, and men usually wore the former while women wore the latter. In the US the name stuck as a name for any men's perfume, even if the concentration was not eau de cologne. I think companies use "cologne" to refer to a perfume for men, especially American brands like Ralph Lauren, as well as anything that smells vaguely like the original eau de cologne (Echt Kölnisch Wasser (Eau de Cologne)Echt Kölnisch Wasser Eau de Cologne), like Viking CologneViking Cologne for example.

Strangely I don't see any of those perfumes as having Eau Fraîche flankers in the Parfumo database, except for Chance. Daisy Eau So Fresh (Eau de Toilette)Daisy Eau So Fresh Eau de Toilette is an EDT, Love Story (Eau de Toilette)Love Story Eau de Toilette doesn't look like it has an eau fraîche flanker, Belle d'Opium (Eau de Parfum)Belle d'Opium Eau de Parfum is an EDP, Bloom Nettare di FioriBloom Nettare di Fiori is an EDP, Brit Rhythm for Her (Eau de Toilette)Brit Rhythm for Her Eau de Toilette doesn't have an eau fraîche flanker, and neither does Bright Crystal (Eau de Toilette)Bright Crystal Eau de Toilette

Aftershave has about 1-2% concentration afaik so I guess it could be classed as an eau fraîche.

I did a google for "eau fraiche perfume concentration" and one link was to an article "What Is Eau Fraîche And How To Choose The Best One". That's where I got that list.

Found an article in GQ from 2020. Has the two you listed for men (Y and Versace) and also Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 pour Lui Eau FraîcheEau de Lacoste L.12.12 pour Lui Eau Fraîche . Apparently there are more in the L.12.12 line that were in the pop up: Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 pour Elle Eau FraîcheEau de Lacoste L.12.12 pour Elle Eau Fraîche , L.12.12 Rose Eau FraîcheL.12.12 Rose Eau Fraîche , L.12.12 Blanc Eau FraîcheL.12.12 Blanc Eau Fraîche .

I have an EDT : Eau FraîcheEau Fraîche but it really acts like an Eau Fraiche, it is very, very light and it's former name was Eau de Cologne FraîcheEau de Cologne Fraîche (can't find a perfume concentration on my bottle though). It could very well be worn by a man in my opinion, very unisex.

Funny you mention bc I remember hearing about  Roja's Parfum Cologne and I'm like "wtf is a Parfum Cologne?" And after doing some research, found out they were just his EDP concentrations rebottled.  So "parfum Cologne" is the equivalent of an EDP. Just like Jo Malone's EDC intense are equivalent to EDT?

Yeah the Roja Parfum Colognes make no sense. It's combining the highest and lowest concentrations into one name, so I guess it works in a way because the actual concentration is somewhere in the middle of a Parfum and EDC. I've read a few places (although nowhere official) that the "Colognes" themselves are EDTs, i.e. Wood Sage & Sea Salt (Cologne)Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne, English Pear & Freesia (Cologne)English Pear & Freesia Cologne, etc. I believe the "Cologne Intense" ones like Myrrh & TonkaMyrrh & Tonka are EDPs.

Those all have 5-6 ratings for performance on here, so they might well be eaux fraîche!

That one could be an eau fraîche, how do you know it is an EDT?

Hi @Omnipotato, Well it says to be an EDT on Dior's website and it's written on the box and on the bottom of the bottle. I don't know if there are rules for brands to call a fragrance an EDT, based on the perfume concentration (Which I can't find on the bottle; I don't have the box anymore, but just looked op a picture of it to see if 'Eau de Toilette' was written on it, which is the case).

yeah it is confusing bcs i also only know i think one edc perfume with that concetration and it is Liz Claiborne lucky you , versace eau fraiche and y eau fraiche are both edt concetrations but idk why they give them that name it seems when a perfume is fresh they give it that name, Dior homme cologne is also not edc concetration it is edt. ussualy i realised cologne is fragraces also means they are a light citrusy version of the fragrance. So most of the time even with fraiche or cologne in the name its usualy edt.....
