Forum Post Over At "F" Concerning Perfumes For Gay
by MRoth | Parfumo Community
...There was a similar drama recently when someone made a thread for what perfumes members liked to wear during sex. I thought it was harmless, nobody has a problem asking what you'd wear to the gym or cinema but oh, the children! All of a sudden Fragrantica is full of children and they must never see the word "sex"! Discussing virginity with your peers is deplorable, apparently! One member in particular came in and started throwing around her weight, "left" the conversation with a flounce only to come back and hurl more insults at me. Had never met that member before so I found it rather amusing.Anyway, the thread (which was quite fun and constructive until that point) was swiftly deleted by admins without a word of comment."These are not the posts you're looking for."These days many people feel entitled to be offended to the point where it's non-constructive. I consider myself to have empathy and I like to play devil's advocate, "why is this person so bothered?" but I do feel like quoting Stephen Fry to some of the exceptionally loud and demanding members. Hell, if I'm going to take offence I'll state why, discuss it reasonably and then let it go. Anything else is just foot-stamping for the sake of it. That kind of bullying running rampant on Fragrantica is one of the reasons why I prefer Parfumo now instead.LGBTQ members should be free to discuss whatever they like. Bigotry is dealt with so often every day that anyone happy to talk about their lifestyle on the internet is well aware of the nastiness some people harbour. Backing down or censoring oneself out of fear in real life when bodily harm is threatened is one thing, but on the internet? No. The close-minded will crow when they can, all too aware that their day is ending. Ignore them for the petty gnats they are. It's natural to ask what others you identify with enjoy, just like a thread full of Australians posting will pique my interest. Starting a thread to weed out people of a minority, however, is devious if that is indeed what occurred... and, yes, I'll use the "bullying" word again since the cliques on Fragrantica get away with so much of it. Like bloody high school over there sometimes and only a small amount of people causing the ruckus each time with seemly no fear of comeuppance. I'm disappointed with how little the moderators seem to care.Thankfully any of the drama queens that have accounts on both sites are smart enough not to try their crap on these forums. To those among them that may be reading my words at this very moment: hello! 8)

...Florette that video looks great, at least from what I have watched so far. I keep trying to make time for it and keep getting distracted! Another thought: how easy is it, if at all possible, to retro-- what is it called when you craft something backwards? I'm drawing a blank on the word, but to be able to give a chemist a sample of an unknown, irreplacable perfume and have them recreate it would be mindblowing. Mindblowing but bittersweet... it would open up too many avenues for plagiarism. But think of the applications! Artificial ouds as good as first grade genuine aoud, cruelty free animalics, perhaps even the ability to revive plants that have not been smelled in a generation.

Perfume Bottle Appreciation
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...I have found myself roaming through Parfumo eyeing bottles vicariously while I wait for my next delivery. Normally I would wait to encounter them in person but there are so many gorgeous niche and limited edition bottles that I have given in to a bottle rating spree! I love the bottle colour sorting feature, I'm tempted to go shade by shade and make a side project of rating each one. Though this is likely to take some time. :wink:Obviously there are quite a few people that do rate by vision alone. How do you feel about this? I suppose least here on Parfumo we know that bottle appreciation will not alter scores for the juice... unlike another site I can think of where something isn't even released yet and yet is inundated with love and hate ratings simply from the visual preview of it!That said, some are of surprising quality. A "cheap" perfume like "Believe" has a particularly beautiful glass container even if the plastic parts detract from the heft of it. Then there are bottles that look fascinating but feel awkward and flimsy when sprayed ("Omnia", I'm looking at you) not to mention those poor life-changing fragrances in cringeworthy plastic monstrosities.A related idea for the moderators... upon mouseover of a perfume preview, can we have icons pop up at say, 50% opacity to show which ratings we have already provided rather than having to load each page individually to check? Just a small star in each colour that we have rated, perhaps a gold star if every rating category is complete.

My dog has Fleas
by MRoth | Off Topic
...My partner and I are happily owned by four cats but only two of them have any palpable reaction to my perfume, our two girls Emma and THE MUNCH are far too independent to notice beyond "Mom smells different every day, what a weird cat she is!"There's Apollo, fondly called Polly, a big fuzzy tank of love and a real sook. We joke that while I love all of our cats equally and to the end of the earth, Polly is my baby. He communicates with me in burrs and clucks... I could go on, but I'll spare you the cat lady ramble! :wink:Unfortunately he's very sensitive to when I spray perfume, he blinks and cringes in a worrisome way so I have to be careful he's not anywhere near... which is tricky since he's tied to me by an invisible string. Once the perfume mist is settled I let him back and and he's fine.Cloud smelled of vanilla the day we brought him home. We adopted him from a woman who wanted everything to be fluffy, fancy and the colour cream, including her small dog and ragdoll cat. She must have had very strong diffusers in her home, it took months for the vanilla smell to leave his fur! A meringue in cat form, he's the only proper "breed" I have ever owned and let me tell you he is a special snowflake. Cloud is always interested in human things, I have to show him everything to say "see, you actually don't want this, so you can quit acting like the world is ending!" This includes perfumes so he often hangs out with me while I unbox and test new fragrances.

How did you hear about Parfumo?
by MRoth | Parfumo Community
...Apicius:It is a bit complicated. The more clicks you have, the better is your position in the Google search lists (However, if you position is bad, how can you get more clicks?)This is what frustrates me, it just seems unfair. Ahh... I have heard it also goes by how many times other websites link to you. Plus there's the new Hummingbird algorithm, hopefully that will change the game a little. I try to do my part with word of mouth, word of mouth! :D

Fun - How do you react when you sample a new fragrance?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...Forgive me if this has been done elsewhere, I just had a friend post a video and I had to reply to it "Hey, this is me when one of my perfumes arrives in the mail! How did you catch me on camera?!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jWYUtQZhK0Share a video or image for how you react.

Which type of perfume collector are you ?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...Once a perfume is past a certain price bracket ($30-$40 AUD for a normal perfume, more for something with rarer, quality ingredients like oud) I go by reviews and notes alone. I couldn't care less if it's niche or a huge brand, if anything niche is much harder for me to get due to being overseas, not being able to sample easily and extra shipping costs. The only time I become enamoured of a brand is if I've tried enough of their scents to say, hell yes, more please! The price bracket I mention is simply general regard how much it costs to make a passable perfume... once upon a time I would try out knock-offs of popular houses but now that I have more experience the formulations are palpably cheap mixes not worthy of the term "juice", just rough, unfavourable synthetics. Still, you can pick up something like "Lovely" or "Believe" for the price of a pizza delivery, but those are exceptions to the rule.

The Science of Scent
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...It occurs to me that while we all obviously enjoy perfumes, so much of how we smell remains obscure. Vibrating molecules, yes... but once you get beyond the basics it gets rather tricky, especially once we get past initial sensory mechanics into how the brain actually absorbs and accesses this olfactory info.I wanted to start a thread for posting information and articles not only about scientific discoveries regarding smell but the social and personal implications of them. Here's one I was reading earlier today after an article popped up about scent sensitivity being an early symptom of Alzheimer's... while the peanut butter test is fascinating, this article is broader, well sourced and though it does become a little dry, it's well worth the read. www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/37603/title/Smell-and-the-Degenerating-BrainTL;DR version: olfactory dysfunction is an early sign of many neurological disorders. The one request I make to those replying with links to share is to please make sure any articles you link have reasonable sources. Casual speculation is well and good but documentation and peer review separates a study from tin foil hat hypotheses.

How did you hear about Parfumo?
by MRoth | Parfumo Community
...CuteChemist:I'm a Fragrantica member, and TBH, I had never heard of Parfumo but I was on Google, looking something up on a HTF fragrance, and the website came up.Yes, exactly. I'm surprised I'd never come across Parfumo before then, it was only an obscure fragrance that brought Parfumo up the search list. Is there some way we can move Parfumo further up the list? It seems rather unfair that the sites on top of the list generally stay there... Parfumo deserves a listing up there with Fragrantica and Basenotes.

...@Hayven, I'm always in love/hate with it. On a warm day it's simply too cloyingt, though that's nothing against In Black as I'm sensitive to sweetness in all perfumes. During colder months it's perfect... stands out from the winter crowd of tuberose florals and gourmands, too.

Fugliest Bottles
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...I used to think the Bvlgari Omnia bottle was horrible, especially the cheap plastic feel of it. I resented one of my favourite fragrances coming from such a tacky container. Since discovering these online databases and some of the more unfortunate designs I take less of an issue with it.Azzaro Duo is identical to a gold-plated Lelo! Wouldn't want to get that confused at a delicate moment. "Honey, why does your crotch smell like patchouli?"

Top 10 Favorite Films of all Time

...The Fifth ElementEternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindThe MatrixDogmaREPO the Genetic OperaSin CityLola RenntQuillsDonnie DarkoGinger SnapsI feel a little out of place as my list is much more modern than most listed here. My partner is slowly getting me into older, classic movies, I never grew up with good movies around; like music, most films were shunned for being "the devil's work". Yes, mothers like that actually exist. That said, many of the movies here are etched on my heart, so while I may appreciate many movies - classic, niche, arthouse etc - for their cinematography or story, it's these ones I turn to for comfort and happiness. If you were to put The Fifth Element on for me in a coma, I would smile.

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members
by MRoth | Parfumo Community
...Thanks Hayven. I've decided to cannibalise my previous Fragrantica comments towards newer, updated reviews here. The collection database here is so organised and neat, I love what the creators have done. I'm going to enjoy going through and completing each page for my perfumes one by one. The messy commentaries on Fragrantica seem ridiculous now. The only thing I might miss is the clickable personal detection of notes, I did find that helpful when looking for new scents.

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members
by MRoth | Parfumo Community
...I just discovered Parfumo today. I've been crazy about Fragrantica ever since I discovered it earlier this year, so I feel rather a turncoat, but the perfume catalogue and sorting information here is astoundingly extensive! I'm looking all over in a daze, it's a warm, pretty machine. No inane, irrelevant comments on fragrances, reviews don't seem to suffer petty thumb down... and the all drama on the Fragrantica forums has really put me off. Don't get me wrong, most people on the forums there are perfectly nice, there's just that handful of loud and obnoxious members yelling into the wind with fanaticism better suited to a holy war than a discussion about perfume. Only yesterday I threw in with a member that was being harassed to the point she almost left the site completely... All conducted under the mask of "politeness". The topic finally reached critical mass, vanished with no comment from moderation. Move along, nothing to see here! Apparently the same member does it regularly. I'll pass, thanks. The downside is I just feel like I've finally started to be part of the Fragrantica community. I'll have to start here all over again, blah. :? I just finished adding my current "have" list. It's 9am and I have yet to sleep... Damn you OCD, filling in my other lists can wait for now.
