Looking for modern chypres!
by Sweetgrass | Perfume Recommendations
...Sleuth:- Relatively new release: "Soir de Lune"- Old and worth checking: "Knowing" and "Miss Dior Original"- Chypre structure without moss: "Le Parfum de Therese", "Colonia Assoluta" (a mature and not-so-light cologne)I'm sure there's 21st century avant garde chypre stuff, but don't ask me!Thanks - I've been looking at "Knowing" as it's relatively easily available across the board. :) The closest thing to 21st century avant garde chypre I can think of is "31 Rue Cambon", the chypre that isn't really a chypre. "Disco Diva" is a nice fruity chypre, and I love those both as well as contemporary (!) "Mitsouko".

Looking for modern chypres!
by Sweetgrass | Perfume Recommendations
...Cryptic:If you're looking for something recent out of the mainstream houses, good luck! Seriously, the only thing that comes to mind is "Miss Dior Original," which is essentially a diluted version of a 1947 release. "Chypre" in the current mainstream parlance usually translates to a patchouli perfume containing no oakmoss whatsoever. On the other hand, the niche houses have many lovely offerings. "Chypre Palatin" by Duchaufour, Andy Tauer's "Une Rose Chyprée" is excellent and Serge Lutens has a few good ones ("Rose de Nuit," "Chypre Rouge," etc.) "Noir Epices" is beautiful, and so is "Hermessence Poivre Samarcande." The problem is, oakmoss is de rigueur for a good chypre and an attempt to ban it outright is currently afoot in Europe. If that succeeds, chypre lovers will probably be forced to turn to the natural perfumers for their chypre needs. I'm still in the process of testing a slew of naturals, but hopefully will have a few to recommend down the line.I really should have gotten some of the old Miss Diors that were being cleared out of the way of the renamed stock a while ago in a cosmetics shop I visited. It is still a good scent, and I didn't rly mind it being diluted... Thank you so much for the niche recommendations! I have been meaning to try some more Tauers but the rose in the name has kept me from checking out Une Rose Chyprée -- I'll just have to get over that :D

Looking for modern chypres!

...Are any worthwhile? Much has been said about the IFRA regulations butchering basically all the classics in this genre. What I want to know is are there any fragrances out there that could fill in the gaps and take the genre to the 21st Century?

Cultural influence on perfume taste
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...Rebella:Oh, in that case swedish (and scandinavians in general I guess) are more like americans, then south europeans. Everything marketed as clean and fresh is on the perfume toplist here. And not to mention all the different celebrity scents. So, fresh, clean, fruityfloral and with some celebrity name on it, it´s a total success here. :? In Sweden we don´t have much of a perfume tradition as in countries in southern europe, and middle east, india and so on. But, on the other hand swedes are very trendy and I think brands like swedish Byredo is popular among people without an actual perfume interest, but that wants to feel more unique then wearing the average drugstore brand. Comme des Garcons is also a little more known in sweden. I can´t say my american perfumista friends differs so much in taste from my european one´s or south american and so on.I dug up this thread from the archives while looking for something else but I definitely spy these cultural differences -- I can't say anything abt American tastes but I can definitely confirm that the Nordic countries tend to favour the fresh, clean, barely-there sort of perfumes with the exception of some global megahits like Poison and stuff. The difference between Nordic countries and Southern Europe is PALPABLE and used to give me headaches ;)Of course this is just my observation but I agree with Rebella, perfumistas' tastes don't seem that affected by local conventions. And to finish this off with a personal anecdote: I used to think "Shalimar Parfum Initial" was a real stinkbomb when I first tried it in the beginning of my perfumed journey, now I think it's a lovely tame comfort scent to wear at home :)

Is it time to stock up?

...This is a timely reminder that I should probably stock up on some favourites, seeing as they were limited editions to begin with and regulations aren't going to help with availability.

Coffee notes in perfume
by Sweetgrass | Perfume Recommendations
...Tar:This is a special treat: Ambre Nue, since it has coffee scent, if you spray once, wait 1-2 hours, and spray again, then it is a real, earthy black cofee.Versilia Vintage - Ambra Mediterranea - this is for my nose totally a Pocket Coffee from Ferrero :DThanks! I have a sample of "Ambre Nue" somewhere, unfortunately just splash :/ I will need to check out Ambra Mediterranea too.Hadrien:Eau de navigateur is my favourite coffee. Green and woody with some coffee beans.L'Artisan? Another one to my list :)A short breakdown of the purported coffees I have tried since starting this thread:Cacharel "Noa" is cute but so clean it didn't really do anything for me, but I have a mini for when the moment calls for that kind of thing. PG "Cozé No.02" was really dense and to my nose it had the texture of a burp, plus there really is a cannabis note in it which I do not fancy. Plenty of stuff I have yet to peruse though! Thanks all for your recommendations :)

Spring is in the air!
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...Oh yes, we're feeling it even up above the polar circle! I went through a nasty flu and doused up on "Moschino Funny!" as part of my get-well regimen. I am definitely craving lighter and subtler fragrances now that the temperatures are above zero again (unusually soon, but still), even though heavier perfumes like "La petite Robe noire Couture" are still a big hit with me. I have enjoyed Beyoncé "Rise", but while it is a bright and happy scent, it is not memorable and doesn't pack enough punch for me. I have not yet found my ideal spring fragrance, so I'm definitely using this thread for ideas!

Blind Buys - Are you a risk taker? Best + Worst Experiences
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...I think all of my recent purchases have been blind buys -- pretty safe stuff, like Coty's "Muguet des Bois" and then the new Beyoncé scent & "Aqua Allegoria Flora Nymphea", both of which I can very likely pass on with ease should I not like them. I have been disappointed -- not dreadfully, but still -- a few times, but pleasantly surprised too. I tend to stick with well-known classics or mainstream favourites for blind buys.(edited: I have actually smelled "Emeraude" before)

The Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line: Your favourites?
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...I have heard both good and bad about these releases, and they certainly seem to fall all across the board in my experience too. I still think the concept is adorable and am looking to expand my AA collection somewhat. So what are your favourites? Or least favourites? What do you think of the concept?Personally I think Pamplelune despite its enduring popularity is an awful sour affair while Lemon-Fresca is a nice, mild-mannered but wearable citrus appromixation - I also just ordered Flora Nymphea blind and hope for the best lol (but it was cheap...!).

Could you recommended a fresh, sexy floral?
by Sweetgrass | Perfume Recommendations
...Oooh, I dare not recommend anything bc summers aren't very hot, much less humid, up here. But if you have the opportunity, check out some of the flankers to "Alien" - the whole range is, IMHO, incredibly sexy. I don't know about Sunessences, but "Alien Aqua Chic (2013)" is one of my favourite florals!

Guerlain Ylang & Vanille Aqua Allegoria Ylang & Vanille - Guerlain

...Sad as it is, it makes total sense from the corporate point of view. If a formula sells well, upcycle it into a more high-end perfume you can charge an arm and a leg for -> profit.

do you know this bottle?
by Sweetgrass | Perfume Discussions
...It definitely looks like a stand-alone bottle rather than a specific brand's design for a specific fragrance to me. It's certainly unique with the elephants and everything, such a shame there wasn't any info on what perfume it contains!

Is it time to stock up?

Re: Is it time to stock up?
...MiaVonTrost:Dalmajen:I would have to find out just which perfumes of mine actually fall under these regulations. I hope Tauer fragrances aren't included in this.I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Tauer fragrances will be affected. Don't shot the messenger. If you prefer your perfumes to include more than a mere trace of rose or jasmine, geranium, cinnamon, coumarin, citruses ... you'd better be prepared to say farewell. I compiled a list of ingredients that are to be restricted or banned. You can find it here.Thank you Mia, those are some of my favourites
