...Flavorite, the golden rule for "bargain" buys is to comfort yourself with how much you saved compared to a full price purchase, rather than how much you actually spent!

Tauer - new Explorer 15ml sample sets
by Triffid | Perfumes & Brands
...Hayven, "Une Rose Vermeille" didn't work for me either. So different to Tauer's other rose perfumes, it conjured images of powdered fruit juice ( think "Tang" or similar) mixed with rose water, somewhat caustic, fruity and sweet. I definitely want "Carillon pour un Ange" and "Incense Rose" but I think I'll order another Discovery Set of samples, ones I haven't tried yet, before making my third choice. My husband likes the lavender in "Reverie au Jardin" but it's not available in the 15ml size.I would love to get Frederic Malle's coffret set for women (12 x 5ml bottles in display box) but its way too pricey and there's a pretty fair chance I won't like all of them. The Malle stockist in Australia never has testers or samples which really bothers me, given that they are the sole distributor here.

The animalic bad girls
...Well Omni, if the Kiwis lose, at least you'll smell divine! I wonder if being an "outdoor work" kind of person makes one less offended by "dirty" scents? I deal with noxious weeds on a daily basis and have reached the point where I can appreciate, almost enjoy, the "cat pee" smell of crushed Lantana leaves or the sour, pyrethrum-like odour of Tagetes minuta (aka "Stinking Roger"). Not quite enjoying the sad stench of road kill, though.

The animalic bad girls
...Well now, I'm getting seriously concerned about how I smell to others when in public! Perhaps I am anosmic to civet or just perceive it differently to others, as I'm realising that my most loved frags contain this note (or its modern equivalent) including the aforementioned "Joy", "Paloma Picasso" and "First". I work outdoors with a "personal fragrance space" that is almost infinite, so I happily don these on work days where they compete nicely with the odour of sunscreen and Aerogard (I know, it's not sounding pretty..). It gets worse though. At my suggestion, my husband tried Paloma Picasso (which I find very unisex) and he now wears it to the office(!). Good god, is he anosmic too? Apparently no one complains, perhaps they are too polite.I did own Versace "Blonde" in pure parfum but gave it away after realising that I really don't like heavy tuberose. I usually don't find reputedly "skanky" frags to be all that skanky. The exception would be the most recent Rochas "Femme" which I thought smelled really "off", though I don't discount the possibility that the tester bottle was past best. I think I might check out some of the suggestions above - with my nose, I'll probably find them to be "office friendly" too!

...That's quite a bargain indeed. I just bought a 100ml bottle of Van Cleef & Arpel's "Tsar" for under forty bucks. I think my husband will like it but if not I'll wear it myself. Not really a "score" in the sense that it's this cheap everywhere (probably even cheaper than what I paid) but I consider the price to be embarrassingly low for such a high quality men's classic.

Tauer - new Explorer 15ml sample sets
by Triffid | Perfumes & Brands
...I totally agree, Diane, and the Tauer's are so potent that a 15ml size would probably last me a year! It also seems that the smaller sizes means the set can be sent as "samples" thus allowing certain shipping restrictions relating to perfume quantities to be bypassed - a clever solution.Frederic Malle makes 3 x 10ml sets (similar for some of the Chanels) but you have to order three of the same fragrance and the individual vials are supposed to be used in a separate aluminium purse spray; Tauer reckons his vials are sturdy enough to be carried alone.

Tauer - new Explorer 15ml sample sets
by Triffid | Perfumes & Brands
...It seems that Andy Tauer has been listening to the laments of his overseas customers (like me) who live in countries with no Tauer stockist or who wish to buy a few of his perfumes in a size that lies somewhere between a sample and full bottle. As the Tauer website does not ship full bottles to my country (Australia) my only current option is to order from the US and grudgingly pay for hefty postage in the $35 - $55 price range. The new "Explorer" set provides 3 x 15ml spray bottles in his cute aluminium slider tin, with free delivery. You can choose three of the same fragrance (great for swaps and purse sprays) or two or three different fragrances to make up the set. Not all of the range is available, but most of the popular ones are. On a price per ml basis, it probably works out more expensive, but for someone like me it can actually work out cheaper due to the savings in postage from the US. Well done, Andy!

The classiest scent in your wardrobe
by Triffid | Perfumes & Brands
..."Classy" is such a subjective term, but my choice would be JOY. This is the scent that makes me just fall in love with myself when I wear it. It seems grand enough for special occasions but also deludes me into thinking I'm one classy babe when I don it with jeans and sneakers. Speaking of "classy" (or not), do you think celebrities actually wear their own offerings to, say, red carpet events? Instead of asking celebrities what designer they're wearing, perhaps interviewers should ask these celebs what fragrance they've chosen for this special event (well, it sure backfired with Nicole Kidman - didn't she admit to wearing TEA ROSE, a drugstore classic, when she was actually the face of CHANEl no 5)?

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members
by Triffid | Parfumo Community
...Hello all,Bit of a ramble...I'm a new Parfumo member and find this site welcoming, entertaining and, above all, informative. I'm not a member (exiled or otherwise) of the other sites and, after reading your posts, am grateful I'm not! I visit those sites randomly and occasionally to read fragrance reviews, particularly when there's a shortage of opinions at Parfumo, but I never once considered joining them - there really didn't seem to be any point. I stumbled upon Parfumo when Googling for reviews for some fragrance or other and, well, I kept coming back as a silent lurker because what Parfumo lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality. I sensed that here was a site that really did feel like a community where reviews are consistently well written, with a good dose of humour and thoughtful insight, and where there was a good chance of getting help through the forums, when needed. I think there's another thread somewhere about recruiting more reviews from members and it is a bit surprising to see that a fragrance owned by, say 100 members, has only garnered a handful of reviews. I think some of us feel ill-equipped to make expert comments on formulas or feel we lack the breadth of experience to make useful comparisons to similar fragrances. I agree, though, that it's helpful to read opinions from a broad cross section of perfume users, regardless of our perceived olfactory deficiencies (as long as reviews are not of the one line "OMG - it's AWESOME!" variety). I'm on the way to posting some of my own, modestly inexpert, reviews - to share my experiences and, ahem, for the vanity of seeing my words on screen (no, kidding about the last bit!).I do have a query - this may not be the place to ask - but is there some way I can see which members live in my country (Australia) without visiting every member's page individually? Geographic remoteness is a bit of an impediment sometimes, especially with sample swaps and finding stockists.

Cardamom!
...Tauer's Incense Rose has a lovely cardamon note in the opening phase, though it's not the prevalent theme for the entire fragrance. It adds a lovely warm, sweet woodiness to the zestiness of mandarin peel, cedar, rose and cool incense. Might be worth a sniff if that conbination appeals to you.
