Is it okay to dictate how others perceive scent?

... Gourmandgrl Totally agree with your whole comment @jettodesu - but especially this part, on not caring what others think/unapologetically enjoying what you enjoy, including "basic" fragrances! They get such a bad rap in the fragrance world. I've written about this before here , on why "basic" fragrance isn't bad (and how mass-appealing can be a sign of something really great). Thank you for reiterating what I think gets forgotten often in this community (not specifically Parfumo, just this hobby in general)! That blog post is great! I forget where this conversation was had now, but I recently talked with someone on here about how liking something just because it's popular, and disliking something just because it's popular, are functionally the same philosophy. You're still dictating your opinion based on other people and not your own original perspectives. The truly "basic" people and the anti-basics are really more similar than they realize! It's natural that in any hobby, you get so deep into the details that you forget the bigger picture. I'm reminded of this hilarious ProZD sketch about what it's like before and after you join a forum for a new hobby: as you gain more knowledge and more awareness of minor aspects of the hobby, you enjoy it more and get to appreciate so many new elements buuuut you also tend to become more esoteric and potentially condescending. If you don't tend to enjoy fragrances that are popular, if the most important factor in a purchase is how unique or rare the fragrance is, go on ahead-- be as esoteric as you want. Just don't lose focus and turn it into an attempt to objectively judge something you may not have even given a proper chance to!

... I agree with you, it's all very subjective so I think it's weird to disagree with another person's review as long as their review is about their own experience. If I say a perfume is bad, you can disagree. But if I say I didn't like it, you can't disagree that I don't like it. I decide if I like it or not, you decide if you like it or not, but we can't decide for each other. So, I think it's important that reviews and replies are clear that we're just sharing our own experiences, not trying to decide if something is objectively true, good, etc. I ignore negative reviews of perfumes I already own and enjoy because I couldn't care less what others think if I like it. And thankfully I'm also not bothered if people think my taste is "basic", childish, etc. I like bath and body works, celebrity fragrances, cute bottles, and anything that I can get for a good deal. I (usually) want to smell like candy or fruit or both. I never claimed to be sophisticated or controversial, and I don't lose a wink of sleep over whether other people think my taste is uninteresting. Fortunately, I think the people who actually judge other peoples' taste are a vocal minority, and most of us appreciate hearing the different opinions and preferences in the community. I may not be one to pick up something super spicy or musky or minimalistic, but I still enjoy hearing about it! Fragrance is one of the most subjective sensory experiences possible. Not even just how scents themselves can cause different reactions, but in the way that everyone's skin/body chemistry can change the performance of a scent. It's not just a superstition of fragrance fans like us, it's really true that some scents just work on some people and don't work as well/the same on others. Not to mention that the ideal "performance" is different for each person: some people want maximum longevity and sillage, others want something much more gentle. Some people want a linear scent and others want something that changes over time. I do think things are much better here culturally than Fragrantica even if there's sadly still some very aggressive and overly-sensitive people everywhere.

... "Pool Boy | Xyrena" is an interesting one, strong coconut note and pineapple too yet not a gourmand on account of the skin accord, cedar, and most importantly/controversially, chlorinated water. Personally I love this one and it definitely fits as a summer fragrance (duh), but it's understandably not for everyone.

... I love notes of passionfruit, pineapple, mango, especially when the rest of the notes also have that tropical vibe. Seems perfect for summer, right? What are your favorite tropical fruity and/or gourmand fragrances? Personally I think Bath and Body Works has some of the best fragrances in this category, it seems like very few designer labels can get this genre right. A few of my favorites: "Costa Rica Pink Pineapple Sunrise / Pink Pineapple Sunrise | Bath & Body Works" "Golden Mango Lagoon | Bath & Body Works" "Tropidelic (Eau de Parfum) | Bath & Body Works"

... Lempi Bleufraglvr jettodesu Bleufraglvr "Spicebomb Extreme | Viktor & Rolf" "Zelen | Boka" Spicebomb is one I would be afraid to take to an airport or train station 😆 but it certainly gets the point across that this is meant to be a very strong fragrance!! If airport security gave me a hard time, I’d just start singing Bruno Mars at them. lol https://youtu.be/SR6iYWJxHqs?fe ature=shared LOL, Spicebomb bottles are actually banned at UK airports and they will bin them in the security, no kidding! I read that it even caused a real issue to someone at Edinburgh airport which is the airport that I'm mostly using too: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/ne. .. 😆 That tracks, Heathrow definitely has the tightest security of any airport I've been through if you really want to bring that fragrance with you on vacation, pick up a generic sample size lol!

... Laddylucks Still pretty new to this hobby but a bottle that really captured my eye is "Atheeri / أثيري | Lattafa / لطافة" I am planning to pick it up in the fall. Yes, that one is so stunning! I'm pretty new to it too and already wanted that bottle so clearly it makes an impression lol

... kittea I really like Lattafa's bottles, which I know is not a super popular opinion... Idk, I think they're heavy and well-made, not plasticky, and I'd rather have something weird and kitschy on my shelf over another glass rectangle. I own "Thouq / ذوق | Lattafa Pride" (I love that the bottle comes in a silly little plastic dome, as if it were a museum piece) but I don't think the bottle is super reminiscent of the scent. And I like the look of "Her Confession | Lattafa / لطافة" and "Atheeri / أثيري | Lattafa / لطافة" although I don't own them. I love the look of "_Quando_rapita_in_estasi_ | Filippo Sorcinelli" and other Sorcinelli bottles. Some of them are very industrial chic which isn't exactly practical, but I do think is cool. Neandertal ( "Neandertal Light | Neandertal" and "Neandertal Dark | Neandertal" ) also has great-looking bottles, like Paleolithic hand axes. They look like they'd be very satisfying to hold. Oh and of course when I was in Australia I picked up a bottle of "Thirst | Victoria Bitter" because it made me laugh to have a tiny bottle of VB on my shelf. I tried to convince myself to get "Her Confession | Lattafa / لطافة" because the bottle is so stunning, unfortunately the actual fragrance didn't interest me much (it's nice but I have very similar ones already) Those Neandertal ones are such a cool concept. A must have fragrance for any archaeologist surely!

... Lempi My favourite bottles are (not in order): "The Mandalorian | Star Wars" "L'Eau en Blanc Edition Perles | Lolita Lempicka" "Elle L'Aime à la Folie | Lolita Lempicka" "Soprano | Xerjoff" "Alien (Eau de Parfum) | Mugler" "Orb of Night Opulence | Ghost" "Fantasia Mermaid | Anna Sui" "Olympēa Onyx | Rabanne" "Aqva Divina (Eau de Toilette) | Bvlgari" "Daisy Wild | Marc Jacobs" "Jardin des Nymphes | Yves Rocher" "Loverdose | Diesel" "Princess (Eau de Toilette) | Vera Wang" "Les Belles de Nina - Bella | Nina Ricci" "Mirage | Oriflame" "Pure Poison Elixir | Dior" Oh no, I fear I need The Mandalorian immediately. And for once I'm not just objectifying the character when I say that lol

... Chrysoptera Maybe a little more prosaic than some of the other bottles mentioned here, but the prettiest one in my collection is "Figment Woman | Amouage" . The pictures here don't do it justice. It's a gorgeous metallic blue-green ombre. Oh wow, I looked up a video review to see it in more detail and yes, it's stunning! It looks like it has that "oil slick" rainbow effect to it, so cool.

... Ceesie Ohh I love the beautiful bottle of Dunhill’s classic "Icon | Dunhill" ! Hehe just kidding of course. But I do really like the ones from the signature line like "Egyptian Smoke | Dunhill" . I agree with Argos having some amazing bottles. I’d buy one solely for that. Also those from Boadicea are beautiful. I don’t know if it’s true that someone who worked on actual props for Game of Thrones worked on the bottle shields but they’re nice anyway! See "Ardent (Eau de Parfum) | Boadicea the Victorious" for example. haha, the Icon bottle is certainly a statement! I feel like a lot of cologne bottles are trying so hard to be masculine they just end up being boring, so I respect when they at least do something interesting. But damn, those Boadicea bottles are, well, bodacious! I was looking at one of theirs on here earlier today, "Opulence | Boadicea the Victorious" and thinking it was giving renaissance festival vibes (in a good way)

... Akira1005 "Princess Hyacinth 1911 / ヒヤシンス姫 1911 | Mucha" (japan only) "Camellia (Eau de Toilette) / カメリア | Mucha" "LolitaLand | Lolita Lempicka" shefar(japan only) https://shefar.jp Marion Crepe Eau de Parfum The box is cuter than the bottle(japan only) https://bdparfum.official.ec/i. .. "Pepe Jeans for Her | Pepe Jeans" "Les Merveilleuses Ladurée | Les Merveilleuses Ladurée" "Zen (1964) (Eau de Cologne) | Shiseido / 資生堂" ↑Unused perfumes up to this point "Avant l'Orage | Maison Matine" It's cute but I really don't like the scent. But I think the bottle and the contents match. "Eaudemoiselle Rose à la Folie | Givenchy" This one looks the same as it does inside. It smells like grape juice or rose-flavored soda. Disney-style. There are so many more but I can't remember the brand names! Oh my gosh, those Mucha bottles are just beautiful. To the wishlist they go!

... DAVID043329 Gotta love Xerjoff's bottles. Also, Adi Ale Van's handmade bottles are quite unique as well, a favorite of mine being "Decembrie 89 - Freedom Elixir | Adi ale Van" Wow, that one is so unique! And I laughed a little when I saw it was a sweet gourmand... not what I expected with that post-apocalyptic exterior.

... Ignore the scent inside entirely for a moment and share with me your favorite fragrance bottle/container designs! In my opinion, conversations about pretty bottles must include mentions of Anna Sui ( "Pretty Pink | Anna Sui" "Fantasia Mermaid | Anna Sui" "Cosmic Sky | Anna Sui" ) and Agora ( "Birth of Venus | Argos" "Neptune's Trident | Argos" ). I also LOVE the classic Greca-style Versace bottles ( "Eros (Eau de Toilette) | Versace" "Eros Flame | Versace" ). I know not everyone likes over-the-top designs like I do, feel free to share your favorite bottles below even if they are much more minimalist. (P.S. I know I said to ignore the actual fragrance, but if you own or tested it, I'm curious if you feel like the fragrance 'matches' the bottle design so to speak.)

... Omnipotato My wife didn’t mind me wearing my frags while she was pregnant (though she was more sensitive to the stronger ones), but we both took a 3 month break from fragrance after each of our kids was born so they could get used to our natural scent. That's actually such a smart and sweet thing to do, I never thought of that before! But it definitely makes sense, wouldn't want to spray on a bunch of cologne before holding a newborn hahaha

... Lempi I've never been pregnant (own choice) but I have definitely heard about this before and find it interesting that hormones can change your fragrance preferences. I've used birth control (Mirena IUD) almost 20 years now but never noticed it changing my sense of smell in any way at all, probably because it's keeping the hormonal levels actually very stable all the time. I've wondered the same thing about if hormonal stability actually prevents scent preferences from changing! There could even be differences between each phase of one's cycle, which would be cool but also annoying because it would be a lot harder to maintain a signature scent.
