Fragrances vs bad memories

... Yes, but I've actually gotten over it. An ex of mine wore Bod Fresh Blue Musk, and one day about 5 years ago my husband came home with a bottle from Walmart. I *ALMOST* said something right then, but didn't (and I'm thankful I held my tongue) because he was excited about it. He said he used to wear it in highschool, and that it brought back good memories. But after years of him wearing it, I have more new positive memories about it than I do negative old ones. I've since told my husband about the ex, and we both think it's funny now 🤣

... Ringtale Shadows444 Pretty stereotypical for a 90s girl at the time, but I loved Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Tom & Huck, as well as Home Improvement. More than this though, I actually thought the Hanson brothers were the cutest things 😂 When LOTR hit theaters I became absolutely infatuated with Orlando Bloom...which is strange now, because when I watch them as an adult Legolas doesn't do anything for me anymore and I'm much happier to focus on Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn or David Wenham as Faramir (who appears later in The Two Towers of course). *ETA* I'm straight and always kind of knew that even as a kid, but I loved watching Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. I thought she had kind eyes, was elegant, and I wanted to come off like that too. Oh yes: Meg Ryan ! I'm also straight (not that is matters), but also think she's one of the cutest in these movies (liked the movies aswell: Real feel-good movies 😉) She's a darling! Absolutely 😊

... Raluko111 Shadows444 Raluko111 Shadows444 I didn't start out hating "photorealistic" but I do now. I've just heard/read too many reviews throwing this word around in a pretentious and very obnoxious manner. It's quite aggravating to me now, despite my earliest reviews (on another site, I haven't transferred them all to here, and likely never will because it's an incredibly daunting task) containing "photorealistic", initially I actually considered it a fun word to say 🤣 I now say "soliflore", or stick to saying 'It's smells predominantly of jasmine (or whatnot) with just a bit of clean musk...' to explain a fragrance. I think photorealistic refers to appearance and image, so I`m not sure how/if it can be used to describe scent. I think there's a fair amount of crossover with senses, if something can smell "bright" (because it's citrusy, or maybe features a fresh rose);"photorealistic" could be appropriate when it applies. Reminds me of the happy pills in college that helped me hear and taste color. 🙂 Those bad boys would probably help with reviewing 😂

Most Underrated Scents?

Perfume Discussions
... Hi! I'm relatively new here too but I like this site and Basenotes more than Fragrantica. I still use all 3, but I dislike the trolling on Fragrantica, and the reviews over there tend to be poor. Lately I've checked Parfumo or Basenotes before Fragrantica if I want to read anything at all. Quality > quantity! Victoria's Secret perfumes are so nice sometimes! Bath and Body Works can be as well. I found a cheapie called "Promise Me" from Aéropostale a while ago. It's a beautiful green tea scent, and very underrated IMO. I think I have a lot of underrated things though, cheap underrated stuff is my modus operandi 🤭 Welcome to the site (FWIW from another n00b here)! I think it's largely a better environment.

... Lempi @Akira1005 Yeah, you're right about the spices and sauna. 😄👍 And yes definitely, childhood experiences and both good and bad memories can affect to person's perception of the fragrance for sure. Sense of smell is such a personal thing really, and it's actually amazing that smells are able to help us remember things that were long forgotten. I think this is why it's so addicting to continually delve into these sensory experiences! I truly do love music too, and I live in one of the most naturally resplendent places on the planet (I don't say that lightly), but I've always been more keyed in with scent than anything audible, visual, tasty or tactile. Regardless of personality differences, preferences, experiences, backgrounds and culture; we can all get on the same platform when it comes to our sense of smell.

... I'm sorry if commenting on a zombie thread is in poor taste. I do love the assistant feature here, I sometimes struggle with overthinking my SOTD. Do I follow it usually? No, but I have a few times. Regardless, it's fun to check it. "As Dark Things Are Meant to be Loved | Alkemia" is my first suggestion.

... Seltzerpapi @Shadows444 your post made me chuckle! I think there's some truth in what you say. Personally, I own bottles of perfume that cost me $12 and I have a few that cost me several hundred. For me, the decision to purchase is really just based on "do I like the way this smells?" But I'm not sure that's the case for everyone. I also wasn't wowed by "Lune Féline (Eau de Parfum) | Atelier des Ors". Based on reviews, I expected my first sniff to be transcendent. And it was nice but not nice enough to motivate me to buy a bottle. Thank you 😂 I think it really, really can be humbling to try stuff from various stratums of price! I completely relate to you. That's how my experience went with LF too, definitely nice, but I had expected to have my hair blown back. I should mention, before anyone gets the wrong idea about me, I did begin to get a titch snobby back in around 2021 when I went on a niche sampling spree. I pulled out of it thankfully (when I also began thrifting more, and realized a lot of discontinued classics are easily just as artful). I've also been humbled and hit in the knees multiple, multiple times by fragrance community because I do love some pretty questionable releases. So I'm all for it, and I hope everyone else realizes I mean it in good humor 😆

... Among niche snobs there's an unwarranted (IMHO) cult following for "Lune Féline (Eau de Parfum) | Atelier des Ors" . This comment will go over like a lead balloon and I'm already bracing for clap backs, I don't make any bones about my collection leaning into cheapo territory...to take your shot (maybe I really am too unrefined to appreciate it), but I think it's nothing outstanding. I wonder if it's an example of high-rolling monkey-see-monkey-do. ~ I point this out because there's hundreds of pedestrian level fragrances the general public enjoys that I don't think are bad usually, but I also don't get why they're as popular as they are. The niche crowd doesn't get picked on nearly enough, so I'm taking my shot at them 😂

How much do opinions of influencers mean to you?

Perfume Discussions
... I like a handful of YouTubers that aren't influencers. I emphatically resist the idea that ALL video creators are also influencers (nobody is saying that on this thread, but I've read such accusations on another website). Some perfume enthusiasts are very sincere and haven't sold out whatsoever. That being said, I often disagree with them as much as I ever agree, but that almost makes me appreciate them even more. And furthermore, I'll sometimes watch one person gush about a fragrance, only to hear someone else say they dislike it and point out flaws in the very next video. I usually listen when I'm doing chores and such, because it's soothing to hear people speak about fragrances, and it does give me some ideas of things I might try...but not in a pushy or weird way. Moreso like - 'Oh nice! That looks interesting, I should order a sample.' It's really no different than reading recommendations on threads here, or on Basenotes or the F-site. But influencers tend to have a speech style and personality that I don't jive with in the first place, as well as inauthentically hyping products they recieve for free. This is to say, I'd personally not listen to them even if they didn't mention perfumes, because their whole presentation and attitude in general simply bothers me.

... Lempi Shadows444 Lempi Probably climate is one factor. Historically Nordic people haven't used strong spices and have bathed in sauna frequently instead of covering BO with fragrances so I guess it goes very far back in history why strong smells and tastes aren't part of the culture. I agree with you, overspraying strong fragrances is definitely offensive, also wearing fragrances in places like hospitals should be restricted of course. However what Finns are doing is a huge overreaction. Faint fragranced roll-on deodorant is considered "overspraying a fragrance", or people are demanding their neighbours to get rid of their rose garden or lilac trees because they smell too strong, that's just ridiculous and pure exaggeration. People demand that others get rid of fragrant plants?! That's beyond depressing. I don't even know what to say to that :( Yes. Overreaction to the max, that's kind of insane. Couldn't agree more. 😅 Like, I completely understand being fragrance sensitive and asking people not to bathe in fragrances when in public transport or hospital or something, however a small but loud group of Finns is just taking it on the next level, seriously 🙈 Sheesh! It's sad that some people are so disconnected from their olfactory sense. These are ones par with the sounds of surf or birds, the sight of a sunset, the feel of grass...etc. I hope I'm not being overly critical, but it's an unhealthy thing to not consider plants and such a good and normal part of life. I'm in agreement with you on hospitals or whatnot, and keeping things light in tight public seating.

... Lempi muzik Is it because of the climate? Maybe in cold weather the smell is more solid? Idk. But this sounds super unfriendly and snobbish. i understand perfumes might be nauseous if over sprayed, but what you say is the other side of extremum. I love smelling different scents when my neighbours cook - it inspire me to eat healthy and diverse my menu. And in recent years the only one time I was irritated by someone fragrance was when someone at work oversprayed "Boss Bottled (Eau de Toilette) | Hugo Boss" or it's cheap alt, which is the worst fragrance ever 😂 Probably climate is one factor.
