Baby Goths in the Moonlight
Opens with a startling blend of caraway and coriander, so strong I feel like I’ve shoved my nose in a spice drawer.

After that first punch passes, a little clean leather and iris emerge, and eventually it mellows into an amber-musky skin scent.

It’s interesting that this fragrance and Book of Shadows are so frequently compared, because they are entirely different to my nose.

The Raven is iris wrapped in a spiced new leather jacket. Book of Shadows is old crumbling pages covered in metal-tinged ink and bound in worn leather.

The Raven is goth-lite under an eclipse. Book of Shadows is an archaeologist pawing through old archives.

The Raven writes dramatic poetry with a feather quill. Book of Shadows is looking for the lost Ark.

Projection is mild after that first spice hit fades, and longevity is moderate. Completely unisex, live out your baby goth dreams.

Nevermore
f you are looking for a black leather jacket type of leather scent…this is it. It smells like a black leather on a cold night in a moonlit garden full of night blooming flowers. There is an old fashioned fountain pen leaking in the inner pocket. The wearer has been trying their hand at Poe inspired lines of verse. The purple floral notes are not too intense and I would say they lean masculine anyway. This is one of my top two favorite leather scents.

In the Spell of Fragrance Darkness
After reading Floyd's thoughts on a scent, my own often feel very small and insignificant.
It must therefore be a special kind of masochism that I keep sharing them here, despite their publication.
And especially with Alkemia's "The Raven," also touched by the somewhat oppressive shadow of Edgar Allan Poe, it is probably the secret of the complex darkness of this fragrance fabric that compels me to write.
Perhaps it is also the glimmer of light that I sense throughout the fragrance journey, which gives me courage and allows me to follow the darkness: Deeply embedded, it seems to be calling out to me!

Do these shadowy figures in the fragrant darkness of this writing room wear the leather-reinforced armors of men of war or simple monk robes of the scribe or even the scientist?
The faint light of the few candles at the desks does not reveal that.

Dense swathes of dark aromatic leather sweep through the low vault, gathering beneath its ceiling, becoming spicier there.
For the scent of cumin, pepper, and cardamom - all black and substantial in form - marries with it: Very interesting and yet also very foreign!
A little more of it would be too much for my sensitive airways.

A breath of air splits the now amber-heavy smoke in the room, the special, slightly metallic scent of ink quivers, fading softly: A door has been opened!
A being, a light figure, its pale face glowing mysteriously beneath a mass of ebony-black hair, enters the room and the atmosphere changes.
The previously almost masculine dark scent profile receives feminine, slightly green and floral notes with woody nuances:
Dark powdery iris and light violet-related aroma accents touch softly, like delicate fingers on the senses, which relax as if freed from the shackles of the previous intense fragrance darkness.
The tension eases: The strength and power of "The Raven" become more bearable for me.
Meanwhile, sillage and longevity are only in the average range, yet the felt minor-keyed fragrance notes are so intense that I almost react with relief to this change in the fragrance journey.

For me, "The Raven" is not a perfume, not a scent - it is rather a densely woven, mysterious story that is being told and that each of us likely experiences and interprets differently.

So not a scent for "I can recommend!"
(But when have I ever recommended something?)
A scent to experience, but not an "experience scent," not a "fragrance event."
However, an interesting detour into a very special fragrance world.

Alkemia's "The Raven" is like a book that I once read but will subsequently place on the shelf: The memory of it will surface during regular/irregular dusting, but we will not live together!
That doesn't have to be; not every encounter must end with love, but with respect!
And the creators of "The Raven," a special fragrance artwork, have my deep respect.

From a Dark Scriptorium
Gray eyes fogged by haze. The light of the lantern stretched in cool arcs, in circles over the desk. A lighthouse in the fog of memory, accompanying all the letters. Thoughts created in lost time. Black ink on parchment. Reality in a leather binding. A match that ignites for hours. Tarred paths through a smoking land. Birches from ash, drifting in the wind. The dark blossoms soon withered. The scent of the earth already on the wall. The black spices likely dried out. A few scraps of wallpaper made from tobacco leaf. A lampshade made of foliage. The rest of the scriptorium in darkness, in dust.
**
Alkemia, based in Amherst, Massachusetts, consistently offers astonishing fragrances far from the mainstream despite their high output of creations. The house produces both oils and EdPs in spray bottles.
"The Raven" opens with cool-spicy aromas of pepper and black cumin, lightly ethereal-green cardamom, as well as a herbaceous-leaf-like-earthy note of violet leaf, which remains subtly perceptible from then on. At the heart, a chord of metallic-herbaceous ink and smoky-sharp, birch-tarred leather dominates, with sulfurous matchstick notes also resonating, likely attributable to the sour ebony that emerges more distinctly in the base, together with an amber reminiscent of dry tobacco, beneath the smoky leather and earthy foliage.
"The Raven" is a smoky leather fragrance that, while sharpened by the ink and wood, is softened by the spices, flowers, and leaves, as well as the amber, veiled like through a glassy gaze. The scent of the dark scriptorium accompanies you moderately throughout the night.

My dentist is a bit quirky. He has a raven perched on his shoulder and wears powdered leather gloves.

At first, the violet dominates; slowly leathery, but never strong, rather fresh, lightly woody, minimally spicy, a bit mushy.
