‘Bitters’ are a type of flavoured spirit characterised by a predominantly bitter flavour. Bitters have an alcohol content by volume of at least 15%.
As well as agricultural alcohol, bitters typically contain extracts of herbs, citrus fruits, other fruits, spices or bark. They are mainly used as an aperitif, a digestif or as an ingredient in cocktails. They are often said to have digestive properties.
