Peru balsam is a dark brown, highly viscous balsamic oleoresin obtained from the wounded trunk and bark of Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae, a tree native to parts of Central America and northern South America. Today, the main commercial source is El Salvador. Its scent is warm, sweet-balsamic, aromatic, and mildly spicy, with nuances reminiscent of vanilla and cinnamon.
