Cologne instead of Corona. No. 7: Shot is Junk.

Shot is, you vegans, muesli lovers, and pacifists, not just the coarsely ground spelt stuff that you always soak in the evening for fresh grain porridge, but also coarsely shredded LEAD or other less palatable stuff that is shot with a shotgun. This results in a wide spread angle, so you somehow always hit something. By the way, "shot" in English is "shot," and a shotgun is a "shotgun." I recently learned that "to ride shotgun" in English (at least in American English) means "to sit in the passenger seat," because in the Wild West, there were always two people sitting at the front of the stagecoach: the one holding the reins and the passenger with the shotgun in hand, in case a rabbit or Indian passed by.

Some fragrance houses also operate according to the shotgun method, for example, Guerlain with its Aqua Allegoria line. The AAs are light Eau de Toilettes that are very close to Cologne, which, like a Cologne, are often simply structured, e.g., consisting of a fresh note and a spicy addition. However, since they are officially EdTs and typically too femininely softened for a Cologne, they do not appear in my Cologne series. In the Parfumo fragrance database, we count 51 Aquae Allegoria, or however one should form the plural here, while the Guerlain homepage lists another 12. In other words, three or four of these things are released every year, and those that are well received by buyers continue, while the others are discontinued. I consider this an abuse of customers as test subjects. Especially from a house like Guerlain, I actually expect them to first test which scents that come from the lab as proposals are good and then bring this selection of the best to market. That would show respect for the customer, who would then know: At Guerlain, I get quality first, and secondly, next year, I will still have the scent I buy this year.

The Acqua-Colonia line from 4711 (with a c, because it is not based on Latin but on Italian, or because someone from the Muppet Show sold a C to the marketing department of 4711) is the German answer to Aqua Allegoria. So, just as Cologne lies just on the German side of the border, these scents lie just on the Cologne side of the border to EdT. Without softening agents and more crystalline than fluffy. Otherwise the same in green. And the same shotgun method: 28 scents in the Parfumo database, 9 on the 4711 homepage.

Because I find this junk, I also stick with the 7.5 points that I previously gave here, even though one could also talk about over 8, as this is likely one of the best scents in this line. At cooler temperatures like today, it has a longevity of about an hour; in high summer, for which it is made, it鈥檚 more like ten minutes. To start with the "performance," which many commentators believe is the most important aspect of a scent ("you must buy it immediately, great H+S, the scent has only one small flaw, smells like crap with raspberry"). It smells like its name, namely blood orange and basil, which creates a very nice, incredibly refreshing summer blend, at least for people like me who enjoy such citrus-kitchen herb combinations. Due to the blood orange, which is certainly synthetically produced, it is already quite far from the classic, centuries-old Cologne notes (lemon, bergamot, lime, neroli, possibly orange) and thus different and, so to speak, modern. Why not, I like it. Even during the first testing, it seemed to me a bit like a stripped-down, simplified, Cologne-reduced version of the classic "Concentr茅 d'Orange Verte" by Herm猫s, which is indeed a great compliment. However, this orange here is redder, indeed bloody, slightly less valuable, and a bit sweeter.

For those interested: The Vincent Schaller, who is still not familiar to me by name, is also responsible for Wilma's favorite remix from the same house, for some scents from "Rituals," and even for the quite well-executed "Oud 27" from "Le Labo."

Overall, really a very nice product. I repeat myself: If 4711 had released a series of, for example, five (permanently established) Acqua-Colonia scents, thoughtfully selected and covering a wide range of fragrances, there could have been even more points possible. As it stands, there is a small junk penalty.

Why didn't I give this a great rating? I'm making up for it now. 馃弳

I haven't tested it yet because I noticed the shotgun method too. I did test one from the line. Modern medical machines are also often tested on customers first, and I find that really a bit too risky. Modern software often requires customer testing as well. It's a fast-paced world now.

If you only knew how often this Aqua Colonia line has saved my day. I particularly liked this one, especially in the height of summer when I couldn't ventilate the room fast enough where the preoperative EKGs for anesthesia preparation were done. The odors from some gentlemen (and the emphasis is really on "gentlemen" here) can be quite impressive on hot days.

A wonderfully lively polemic, a pleasure to read. However, I must disagree on the matter: It's great that 4711 & Guerlain offer us many (some more successful or less appealing depending on taste) variations. The market or the eager judging perfumers will take care of the selection; no curators are needed. Some things stay, others disappear. That's how evolution works.
The basil-y blood orange from 4711 belongs, in my opinion, alongside the quite similar Basil Mandarin from Guerlain, to the suitable refreshers.

I also find the concept silly. It's so clearly aimed at pure consumer habits, like casually tossing it in the shopping cart even though you're not really interested in perfume. And it probably works too. As long as it leads people to fragrances, I'm on board again. It might have its benefits after all.

I feel the same way. They鈥檙e not doing themselves any favors with the constant new releases, which unfortunately are becoming more and more generic. The Blood Orange & Basil is really okay, better than, for example, the series with Ireland and the Himalayas... I haven't been able to test the latest one from 2020 yet.

I guess I didn't read closely enough: Sweeter than the Hermes. That's not a surprise.

Your comment really entertained me again: interesting facts, amusing bits, and pointed opinions - it had it all.
As for the scent itself, First contributed the most interesting aspect for me: no musk. I don't really like AC for two reasons: either the musk bothers me or the sweetness. Or both. This one might be perfect if it shines not just through the absence of musk, but also isn't sweet.

I tested that one too, and my bland notes say: "Herb disappointment with a cologne note." On the other hand, I really like the Concentr茅 d'Orange Verte. But I have to give this 4711 flanker some credit: at least it doesn't have the now ubiquitous, unpleasant musk in the base. Even though the scent doesn't appeal to me: a nice comment!

I'm not exactly a regular user of cologne or light EdTs. A good cologne for me needs to have a strong citrus note, and I'm a fan of Agua de Colonia Concentrada by Alvarez G贸mez with its bold lemon, lavender, and hints of rosemary, thyme, and eucalyptus. Besides that, it's really the good old regular 4711.
Still, I fully respect Cologne users and enthusiasts.
Your comment is great!

I can really imagine how it smells now. I haven't tested it because the pace at which these fragrances are released is dizzying. And by the time I finally decide to try one, they're already gone again.

Very good comment. I really appreciate your clear and focused opinion on mass marketing with a broad impact. It needed to be said.

Very amusing and insightful observation. Although I already like the line, I do see some inflation, especially since the remixes are quite similar. Anyway, very beautiful bottles!
Thanks and cheers!

I haven't paid much attention to the ACs from 4711 and the AAs from Guerlain, even though there are some really nice scents among them. The big companies want to make money, so they focus heavily on quantity and flankers. Your informative and humorous take on the topic is really well done again. And I don't know the plural of AA or AC; I didn't take Latin ;-)

I completely agree with you: A comparison with the AAs is obvious; they鈥檙e nice too (in a good way, not like the little sister of...) and they are a bit overdone. A little less would probably be better. But at least some good things stick around, and this one definitely belongs to that category.

Was "Sherlock Humbug" came to you and wanted to screw "Heyyy, opening the coat" crap with raspberry on your cheek? "Pssssst!"
I find the scents I got to try so bland... what a shame.
The concept would otherwise be good.

Thanks for the clarification regarding "shotgun." I didn't know before why the term is used for the passenger, but it makes sense.

A very accurate review! I read it with great pleasure. Given the recent influx of other elaborate posts in the forum, I urgently wish for a shotgun...

Actually, Allegoria comes etymologically from Ancient Greek (伪位位蔚纬慰蟻委伪) and would then be "allegorias" in the genitive.
And now the know-it-all mode is off again ;-)))

Guerlain also has one with basil and mandarin. A good one. Hmm, is that still available?

I actually find the method legitimate. The scents are designed with computer support anyway, so there's nothing really bad in there-there's something for everyone, and if it doesn't work out, they just discontinue it. The products are relatively inexpensive, so why go through extensive market research?
The review is really entertaining to read! I especially liked the Muppet Show and H&S Sottisen. And the casually thrown-in description of the general character of both lines was great.

My favorite is Lime & Nutmeg. However, it hasn't made it into my collection yet due to the points you mentioned. I enjoyed reading your comment, and I really like your sense of humor! :)

I had that one back in my pre-Parfumo days. And I foolishly gave it away. Maybe I should test it again. 'Pink Pepper & Grapefruit' is my favorite from the line. However, the longevity could be better there too.

As a vegan who can't tolerate spelt and doesn't like muesli, and who avoids both grain and junk, I say: long live the variety we can choose from. Who knows how many creations have disappeared forever in the fragrance factories, even though we would have loved them. Unfortunately, some multifaceted classics are no longer available in stores. Among the Acqua Colonias, I only miss the one with peppermint; Blood Orange & Basil has become a no-go for me.

@Helena, Toosmell: Off-topic Latin: If "Allegoria" were an adjective, it should be "Allegorica" in my opinion. The form "Aqua Allegoria" probably isn't classical Latin. More like: "Water Allegory." Right?

That's exactly how it is. Other companies do it the same way. But if you're looking for a short and varied fragrance experience, that's totally fine. Something will definitely fit.

I agree with you, both the AA and AC lines have some really nice, albeit fleeting, fragrances. This one is one of my personal favorites, even though it needs to be reapplied a lot in the summer, which I think doesn鈥檛 take away from the scent at all. I would even rate it higher than a 7.5 ;-)
And: I appreciate Aquae Allegoriae in the plural, since the adjective always corresponds to the noun in case (yes, I鈥檓 a know-it-all ^^).

Three emotions:
1. It's definitely a pleasure when Spee lets go of all self-control and brings out that snarky casino humor.
2. It's true, customers are not rabbits or guinea pigs. Shame on Guerlain!
3. I like the "Blood Orange and Basil" among the Acquas the best and would give it an 8 - 8.5, which you deny it. Grain, corn, and blackberry trophy!
