Unfortunately never quite, quite, quite big

It's time to think again about a few fresh summer fragrances. A truly great representative of the zesty-fresh faction immediately comes to mind. It's time for me to champion the Etienne Aigner fragrances once more...

Unfortunately, the fragrance division is decoupled and detached from the company that stands for fine leather and bags in Germany like hardly any other, while remaining understated and still maintaining its modest headquarters in the backyard of a Munich residential area. The rights to the fragrances have been passed back and forth between various corporations a few times, and large advertising campaigns are a thing of the past. Perhaps this is why the fragrances play a subordinate role in the major perfumery chains, and we tend to know them more from the advertising flyers of cheap drugstore chains or the discount tables of large department stores. Yet, the Aigner fragrances are often much better than their reputation.

It is a zesty-fresh scent, which is evident from the very first spray. Bergamot paired with lemon, along with not too bitter grapefruit and not too sweet melon, combined with a synthetic accent that is often referred to in literature as "coolness." But that’s where the artificial impressions end, as nutmeg and rosemary provide some spicy edges and contours. In the base, the usual suspects come into play with a subtle tonka, exotic woods, and a hint of amber and musk. The spicy-bitter base is clearly present, yet the fresh and transparent notes flow around these elements and continually come to the forefront. The fragrance is marketed as unisex, and I would see it as such; neither the bitter-spicy nor the floral-sweet accents dominate - instead, XXX Large feels very cohesive, very balanced.

You can tell it is clearly a fragrance from the early 1990s, when so many similar fresh-aromatic scents came into fashion. Many came, not a few went, and even fewer have managed to hold on until today. XXX Large is one that has persistently held its ground, and it is available at very reasonable prices in drugstores. The scent itself is not only pleasant, with its good longevity and appealing sillage. The design of the satin-finished and classically round clear glass bottle also impresses with timeless elegance, while the packaging is a negative black with silver.

Unfortunately, XXX Large could never establish itself against the big competition, but it’s still nice that this aromatic fresh scent still exists.
