Jazz lounge meets a warm, comforting vanilla

This perfume was tested by my boyfriend at Etiket. When I got a whiff of it from the paper strip, I knew I also wanted to try it. Thankfully, my boyfriend got himself a a travel size and I got to try it too.

The opening is like pencil wood shavings. At first, it smells sharp, woody, with a hint of spices that's reminiscent of peppercorn and juniper berries. It's not really my forte, so I was about to write it off, when the scent finally started evolving after the 15 minute mark. Under the woody layers, I could smell a sweet vanilla trying to drift up. It's sweet yes, but also vegetal (if that makes any sense) and earthy. It's not cloying and there's no artifical sweetness. Instead, there's a deep, resonating and complex vanilla. Woods start to become a bit more fleeting, leaving behind a spicy accord that surprisingly pairs well with the vanilla. It smells like what I imagine a jazz lounge smells like: refined, elegant, with a bit of darkness. At the drydown, vanilla becomes warm, creamy and comforting with a gently tingle of spiciness. It's truly a beautiful vanilla.

Unfortunately, the pencil wood shavings scent at the beginning of the perfume is the biggest deterrent from me getting a full bottle. I'm stil quite impressed with this offering and although I feel it leans more masculine, it's a beautiful spicy vanilla perfume fit for anyone. I might try it again in a few months to see if the vanilla ends up tempering the woody and spicy note.
