Summer on Cape Cod
A long summer is coming to an end and the bed linens are fluttering on the line between the two apple trees. It’s time to winterize the summer house - to keep out the sea winds, to fight against salt and decay. We throw white sheets over delicate furniture. We bid farewell to a summer that has been and will return next year.
The air is already autumnal and I see apples ripening on the trees.
One last time, I bury my nose in the Egyptian cotton of the bed linens - then a long car ride awaits, school, the city, a snowy winter.
This scent is carefree in its freshness and it embodies the South that I only knew as a child from stories, books, and movies. Mandarin trees and shimmering heat, over endless cotton fields.
Antebellum, plantations, carriages, crinolines.
There are days when I need this scent as desperately as there are days when I crave cinnamon muffins and sweet potato casserole.
And then Sea Island Cotton envelops me gently and smoothly after spraying, wrapping me like freshly washed bed linens and yet, I can always smell it, only the first note fades away. What remains are my childhood and the summers on Cape Cod.

I unfortunately don't cook (anymore). I've lost interest. How do I get that thing, Mrs. Thingy, huh?

I'm happy to share the recipe for my Sweet Potato Casserole. And I would love to have a scent for those days when I'm too lazy to cook...

Beautiful how scents can affect us - they preserve and enhance memories that are more precious than we often realize.
