American Dream: Unique and Curious Cologne
"Un1t3d is the first Twin of fragrances signed by Blauer, designed for both men and women. The inspiration comes from the authentic, creative, and cool style of the brand made in the USA, resulting in two precious and ambivalent fragrances. The high concentration of natural essence pairs seamlessly with the exceptional high-tech content of the packaging. Blauer—uncompromising performance. That’s what the advertisement claims.
I did a bit of quick research, and it turns out these creations come from the contemporary Italian nose Luca Maffei, a niche perfumer who also crafted Stone for Him | Replay, which I love to wear on a cold fall day.
I’d had my eye on Un1t3d for a while. Just a few weeks ago, I stumbled across it in an online shop and placed an order. Damn! Un1t3d is a good juice. It evokes the American metropolitan atmosphere—the scent of a city. The fragrance leans masculine and safe, belonging to the Aromatic and Fougère families. There's a distinctive déjà vu sensation that feels familiar yet intriguingly new. It shares a hint of Aventus (Eau de Parfum) | Creed’s leathery quality, a touch of Terre d’Hermès (Eau de Toilette) | Hermès’s rugged earthiness, and a dash of Sauvage (Eau de Toilette) | Dior’s gentle warmth.
The opening is bright and crisp. The citrus sharpness and powdery bergamot are twisted with the playful juiciness of green apple—like freshly cut fruit, bittersweet and alive. This blend is brought to life by the spicy freshness of cardamom and the resinous depth of elemi. These notes balance the tart and sweet elements, creating a vibrant overture that awakens the senses. It’s here that I detect a kinship with Creed Aventus, though without the pineapple note.
The heart intensifies with the inebriating scent of pittosporum blossom, surrounded by wisps of incense and soft inlays of leather. Take a deep breath—there it is: a burst of honey and orange, sweet and floral, rich enough to lie down on. “What is that?” I wondered. It’s the pittosporum, whose blossoms release an intoxicating aroma reminiscent of osmanthus, orange blossom, and orchid. That’s the scent of a city—the heady essence of oranges. Un1t3d and Terre d’Hermès share this core: the bitter orange and smoky incense linking them like kindred spirits.
The base is woody and grounded. Cedarwood lends strength, patchouli adds earthiness, and synthetic moss gives a modern edge—all resting on a soft foundation of amber and musk. I’d bet the amber used here is ambroxan, which gives the dry down a sensual sweetness closely resembling Dior Sauvage. It lingers with that same clean, alluring warmth.
Spot on, Mr. Luca Maffei! Un1t3d is a fragrance that feels familiar yet distinctive. I picture modern men wearing this while commuting through a buzzing city, on business trips, or out for dinner and drinks with friends. Spring and fall—those in-between seasons—suit it best, though I’ve been wearing it through this hot summer too. It deserves my respect.
Both longevity and sillage are average, so reapply if you plan to wear it all day. Still, it’s a charming slice of the American dream.
I based this review on a 100ml bottle I’ve owned since June 2018.
