Paris-Biarritz

Paris-Biarritz begins with its citrus notes out in full force. According to Chanel, it is grapefruit and mandarin orange. But, I definitely pick up on a lemon note, pretty clearly. To me, it actually starts off the strongest.

The citrus is juicy, refreshing, but very cold. Almost like they threw in an iced accord. The composition does have a bit of an aquatic note in there. Almost oceanic, in how it comes across. Now, it isn’t super powerful, but I get it each time I spray this perfume.

Beyond all of that, the neroli not adds to the citrus, while also creating a green and spicy fresh undertone to Biarritz.

Once the juiciness of the citrus has faded, this becomes drier, greener, and more floral. Neroli and lily of the valley are the floral notes here. Paris-Biarritz becomes a balanced mix of those along with some ample vetiver, musk, and patchouli.

It’s a light soapy citrus with woody, green, and musky aromas exchanging places during the dry down. It’s something I’ve experienced with plenty of other scents, but the watery/sea vibe I get, does give it some distinction.

Very French Flair with an Elegant Sprightliness

I smell it, this French flair that many women possess. Do you know that feeling when a woman walks by and I, as a woman, have to acknowledge without envy that she has class? Not super beautiful but very attractive, not necessarily chic and dressed in the latest fashion, but in a special kind of careless and unintentional yet effortless elegance, the hair a bit too wild and daring, but with every movement of her head, one is captivated. Then a scent hits me - she has already passed by, but I smell freshness, jasmine, rose, and something very oddly interesting, perhaps a hint of vanilla or what is it? Her secret! A lightly warm and cool sexiness. This is a woman you like; she could be the good friend, has nothing conceited about her but a refreshingly cheerful laugh, yet her eyes can also entice and make any man curious. I liked the scent immediately; it lasts a very long time and has that familiar statement of a Chanel fragrance. Ladies, try it and you will understand what I mean.

Chanel Refreshment

The small bakery is only a few hundred meters away from the holiday home.

A wonderfully lukewarm breeze caresses her skin.

The sun shines through scattered clouds that line the otherwise light blue sky.

Her black stilettos, with a gold-embellished tip, leave a fine audible "click" on the large stone tiles, which gradually seems quieter and then increasingly unattainable to him.

He spots his wife walking between the large mandarin trees; she has chosen a cream-colored satin summer dress that reveals a very generous view of her back and even just a tiny bit of her bottom.

She knew he would enjoy this sight, and just before the distance becomes too great, she liked to briefly turn her head back, smiling mischievously into his deep blue eyes and leaving something unique behind.

He will never forget her transparent, freshly greenish sweet, fine fruity scent; it truly describes her lightness and youthful spirit, carried by an intense elegant, powdery floral cream note of lily of the valley.

The sillage is designed to be noticeably present for 2.5 hours at a good quarter-arm's length before it becomes intimate.

The Lady with the Lemon

Years ago, I saw - in a castle or museum, I can't quite remember - the portrait of a lady in a dress made of airy, light silk muslin. She smiled kindly at me, her viewer, yet looked past me, into a kind of infinity behind me. In her hand, she held a lemon. I still remember that I found this very unusual at the time and therefore asked the museum lady what the mysterious lemon was all about. And she simply replied: Bitterness.

In those days, when the beautiful lady had her portrait painted, it was not socially 'comme il faut' to display one's unhappiness. A countess or a lady commercial counselor - or whoever had the means and leisure to hire a portraitist - was expected to be cheerful in public. Having oneself depicted with a lemon was the only non-self-compromising way to show how unhappy she really was. This impressed me so much at the time that I remembered it.

Is Chanel's Paris - Biarritz the scent for a bitter, unhappy woman..? No, of course not. Is it a perfume that invites one to pause and reflect, beyond its superficially cheerful freshness and Chanel-esque elegance? Certainly. Named after that legendary seaside resort in the far southwest of France (more so in the late 19th and early 20th centuries than today), it gives a serious echo to both - cheerfulness and worldly elegance - and that glance into a kind of infinity. If one allows it.

Apart from lively, feather-light citrus cheerfulness and the established 'comme il faut' in every fiber of its fragrant being, it has a fine, bittersweet tremor - shy lily of the valley in shady ground - akin to an impatient yearning for an unreceived caress. This makes it interesting, unexpectedly elevating it above the expected - beyond hesperidic freshness and the brittle, cognac-colored undertone that is so iconic for many fragrances from the house of Chanel and from the pen of Olivier Polge.

Conclusion: a superficially bright scent on its journey from Paris to the southern Atlantic coast. It is accompanied by a delicate, underlying sadness - like the painting of that beautiful, nameless lady with the lemon in her hand.

A Touch of Freshness

For me, a beautiful scent for summer. You definitely have to like citrus fragrances with this one. The citrus notes are really very prominent at first. After a while, however, the floral note comes through, and from there it transports me to an afternoon in the sun, a book in one hand, a lemon-(mandarin-) lemonade in the other, and a bouquet of lily of the valley on the table. Always natural, never artificial or synthetic.
Unfortunately, it fades very quickly. After 2-3 hours, it is actually no longer perceivable on my skin. Paris - Biarritz decides, so you have to be prepared to spray generously and frequently. But that can also be a nice feeling.
