Treasure Hunt

The search for the protagonist of the perfume Ambre Tabac by Daniel Josier does not lead us directly to the namesake notes of amber and tobacco, but first to the incense, which from the very beginning decisively determines the fragrance direction. It does so with an intense, spicy aroma that leaves little doubt about its current dominance. From the outset, this incense also serves as a soft, warm, and protective cloak, instantly reminding me of the aromatic scent of the Christmas incense figures before the home fireplace. It never resembles the sacred smell of cold church spaces or that of smoke or biting fumes. This is largely due to the side-noted, not independently noticeable fruity-fresh bergamot, which perfectly integrates into the incense and softens its dark peaks.

While other perfumes often evoke emotions and experiences through their scents in my memory, with Ambre Tabac it is more about its packaging with content for me. As children and teenagers, we enjoyed unrestricted freedom while playing and wandering in the countryside, in the adjacent, destroyed, and already overgrown airfield, the many small woods, gravel pits, ponds, and openly accessible dumps. A paradise for explorers, adventurers, and treasure hunters. We often found our little treasures in the form of cartridge casings, signs, watches, porcelain, tools, spray bottles, cigarette albums, books, photos, small bottles, cutlery, and much more. Only the "big catch" eluded us, but we knew exactly what it should look like, inconspicuous on the outside and shining golden on the inside! Our greatest treasure, however, which we were not aware of at the time, was our freedom and carefreeness to do all this, completely without supervision, without helmets, and without control calls!

These times and events occupy my thoughts as I unpacked the perfume Ambre Tabac by Daniel Josier. The dark box made of sturdy cardboard, solid and adorned with some pale golden embellishments, gives a rather modest, simple impression! The brighter seems, no, dazzles a sparkling sun at the viewer upon opening the box. The thick glass bottle almost completely fills the case and sparkles together with the huge Golden Nugget cap, while the bright radiance of the golden-yellow liquid dispels any last suspicion that this is not a significant treasure!

After the incense has set itself in an intense, bright, and sweetly fresh manner, it is immediately impressively flanked by tobacco and amber. Although these titular fragrance notes are supposed to appear only as a base accord, they already mix very early in the scent of Ambre Tabac, with their tobacco-like facets becoming increasingly prominent over time, woody, spicy, and marzipan-sweet. Additionally, very warm, velvety, and earthy aspects come into play, but all perfectly integrate into this complex, highly aromatic overall composition. A mentioned vanilla note surely contributes its sweet-spicy aroma without making an overt appearance. The supporting pillars of incense and the increasingly dry, powdery, and harsher tobacco remain intact until the end.

Ambre Tabac was created as an Eau de Parfum for men with very good longevity (around 10 hours) and decent sillage. The very hefty, masculine bottle directly indicates this. Daniel Josier, the responsible perfumer, certainly crafted his masterpiece here. Early in life, he became interested in perfumery and quickly received direct employment with various companies after training and studies, and/or worked with many long-term partners, including Symrise, UniLever, LVMH, Iberchem, and Puig L'Oreal. In 2009, he founded his own collection of luxurious niche fragrances with the company L'Atelier del Perfume. He often draws on the classic-traditional inspirations of his Spanish homeland and its fantastic landscapes, coasts, and cities.

Thank you very much for accompanying the reading!

I always find it amazing how nostalgia and the memories associated with it come rushing back when you have certain items in front of you.
You often remember childhood the most fondly, just like you beautifully described in your experiences.
While Ambre Tabac doesn’t remind me of the old days, it’s a mood booster and a loyal companion in winter for me-almost my favorite scent.

I really liked this scent, which I got to know through a letter while hiking! It matches my taste perfectly. Just like your memories of childhood and the carefree freedom of playing. I got to experience that too, at least until I was 11, before school started to take over more of my freedom. But until then, there was nothing better than playing outside with other kids. You never had to make plans; there were always others around... you just went outside. Everything else fell into place by itself 😊

Thanks for the great story. We don't have a landfill here, but we do have a former Russian airbase. The aircraft bunkers are still standing, and the apartment blocks are in ruins. Entry is strictly prohibited due to safety concerns.

I just sprayed Aura Sublime and Ambre Tabac on both wrists and then checked out your collection. I think you might like this one too. If I had to describe it for you, I’d say it’s something between Shalimar Cologne and Ambre Tabac. It has the similarity of the first and the presence of the second.

A wonderful nostalgic comment about this fantastic fragrance. I'm wearing it right now and love it especially in the fall. For you, there's definitely a 'unassuming on the outside and golden shining on the inside' trophy. You truly deserve it!

Even though frankincense isn't really my thing, your wonderful review makes me curious. I'm always in for tobacco :). I really enjoy setting down a memory cup full of treasures.

Oh, what a great trip back to my wild childhood.
I was on junkyards twice too :-)) It was awesome.
I got a serious scolding and had to clean everything up.

I got it from a sharing and only sprayed it once, then it disappeared into a box - I’ll go look for it. And then I’ll be back. Your comment is very informative again - enjoyed reading it!

Thank you so much for the vivid and incredibly informative review! You create a great atmosphere with the nostalgic images - you can almost see the kids rummaging around. It seems like a wonderful scent - and I agree with Knopfnase: the common thread is frankincense!

A wonderful review that goes beyond the sensitive scent description and is nicely sprinkled with a touch of wisdom... and has made me quite curious about the fragrance. I'll set aside a self-painted children's freedom trophy for you!

A really lovely review with a little reminder upfront :).
As a child, I also had my fun and had an old gravel pit as an adventure playground with friends. It's wonderful when scents can evoke such memories, and the fragrance sounds really nice. I enjoyed reading this very much :)

I grew up similarly free; we had a community garden with adjacent woods where we could run wild. I also love the scent; I had it once, but at some point, my Schalke boy stole it from me. Very nicely described. Great!

How wonderful! I can really relate to your memories - we had abandoned tracks that went through a forest, an adventure dream for kids, complete with exciting challenges ;-). The scent sounds great too, and if it brings back those memories for you, it’s definitely a treasure. I enjoyed reading this!

Thank you for this very detailed, authentic review enriched with biographical references! I finally found our common ground: frankincense. ;-) It might be a bit too masculine for me, but it's definitely worth a try - and then there's Mr. Knopfnase, who can also smell like frankincense. Inspiration trophy!

Oh yes, that sounds good. And near a shooting range, probably on the other side of the Cold War, we too found adventurous play spots in the woods as kids...

Surely a magnificent scent - one that I would also enjoy. I find it very interesting that you specifically mentioned the bottle and the associations connected to it; often the bottle isn't even addressed, even though it is part of the fragrance as a work of art (in my opinion). Great comment, carefree-freedom-treasure!

Wow, this is a perfume review par excellence! A meticulous and tangible scent note analysis (hats off!), a beautifully almost poetic description of the bottle, interesting info about the perfumer, and on top of that, wonderful insights into a carefree childhood that made me feel a bit nostalgic. Very well written, thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

Such a beautiful review. Yes, we enjoyed freedom, but first and foremost, we were free in our minds and had imagination, which is so important to enjoy freedom. I really like the scent, and I would wear it as a woman anytime.

The scent seems perfectly suited for cooler temperatures. I would definitely wear it then if it were an option for me. From your description, it feels like it has the qualities to be a wonderfully "warming" accessory for the soul during the darker months. Very beautifully and vividly described... Cheers and trophy :-D

.. this time, I enthusiastically read not only the information about the fragrance itself but also the account of your childhood and the freedoms we all had back then. It reminded me of my daily adventures in the nearby forest.. I also really liked the detailed description of the packaging along with the bottle. Thank you!

Many keep mentioning how much freedom and carefreeness they enjoyed as children. Yet, the upbringing of the post-war generation was quite authoritarian and strict, even involving physical violence. I wonder if this is viewed through rose-colored glasses in hindsight or if people just remember the good times. I really enjoyed reading your review, though. It's great that you had such a wonderful childhood.

I’m lucky to call this treasure my own, and it truly is the best scent from Daniel Josier, even though he has created a few other successful fragrances. It’s nice to see a treasure hunt like this; nowadays, kids usually only experience that digitally.
