I Wish The Party Never Ended...
Bois Bourbon opens with a fabulous combination of dark cinnamon spice and deep cedarwood that comes off as very much like the smell one would expect from a boozy Bourbon-laced cedarwood cask. The boozy, almost gourmand spiced cedar is enhanced by just the faintest hint of Gothic rose in the heart, combining with an almost bitter-sweet saffron spice to deepen and enhance the dark woody nature of the scent further. During the dry-down, the booze-laced cedarwood softens and begins to recede as a powdery, almost almond-like heliotrope joins the fold and takes the fore late. Projection and longevity are both excellent.

Bois Bourbon is quite the amazing scent early-on. While tobacco is not a listed note (and indeed it probably contains none), the early and middle stages of the scent's development very much remind me of the smell one gets when entering a fine tobacconist. The dark cinnamon spice giving off a tobacco and bourbon vibe, and the cedarwood resembling the scent of cigar boxes within. I could definitely see one enjoying wearing Bois Bourbon while smoking either an old traditional pipe or a fine cigar, as the two scents complement each other so well. Unfortunately, the fun comes to an abrupt end as the slightly powdery heliotrope softens the scent and dispels the illusion during the dry-down as the party of excesses comes to a close. That said, it is a great journey getting there and what a great time was had at the party while it lasted. Bois Bourbon earns a very good to excellent rating of 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5.

Finely Crafted Hedonist
1990 Barao de Vilar. A tawny, single harvest Colheita Port wine, aged for 21 years in oak barrels and then bottled. Each time, it is a revelation in taste, dense and finely fruity at the same time, with a lingering finish, notes of dried fruit, caramel, and vanilla. I am far from preaching superiority and quality in all areas, but those who limit themselves to cheap spirits in the supermarket sadly leave this world uninformed.

Jerome Epinette must have had similar thoughts while crafting Bois Bourbon, as what greets you here in terms of aromatic play can only be described as extraordinary. The alcoholic notes at the beginning are voluminous and fruity, ruby-red forest berries blend with malty, amber whiskey and cognac. The scent is creamy and spicy at this stage, with saffron clearly making its mark. The subtly smoky leather that can also be perceived reminds me somewhat of “Bentley for Men Intense,” which, by the way, did not fare particularly well with me. This was mainly due to the intensity of the fragrance rather than the composition itself. In this case, however, the leather is exemplary integrated into the overall concept, very present at the beginning and noticeably toned down as it develops.

After about two hours, the scent profile transforms, a beige hue now predominates, and a cozy, powdery warmth, slightly dusty, beautifully complements nuances of almond milk, cherry, and vanilla. The gourmand spectrum is likely due to the heliotrope, which shares its stage with cinnamon (stripped of all its edges) and rose (matte and bright).

In the final third, Bois Bourbon becomes very intimate, a pleasant move that cleverly preempts an overkill. At the same time, the fragrance regains some of its sharpness, the cinnamon extends its claws a bit once more, preventing a slide into overly shallow waters. Overall, a hedonistic masterpiece at a high level. Indulgence is allowed and desired.

Wonderfully different..
..at least for long stretches of the fragrance development. Bois Bourbon is a wonderfully successful scent that makes you feel comfortable from the very first second. This is probably also because I really like creamy and powdery fragrances (since Dior Homme). The first minutes of BB are characterized by a delightful lavender-saffron mix..with a minimal hint of cinnamon. It feels very natural and somehow excitingly different. Since Oud by MFK, saffron has been my secret favorite, as it rarely stands out extremely in fragrances, but it shapes them very decisively. Saffron provides a warm-spicy coziness, something that perhaps only white musk can achieve. The heliotrope sweetness is very subtle and in no way intrusive..I perceive it similarly in Armani's Eau de Nuit, and it fits very well with the slightly ethereal (non-green) lavender and the lightly peppery spice. What can be more distinctly detected is a very beautiful rose that comes across as a bit waxy. It is totally unisex, not overly sweet, but also not overly masculine-dirty. It seamlessly integrates into the fragrance at this point. Always accompanied by a noticeable powder that is very pleasant but also quite dry. I can also detect a slightly subtle raspberry note, neither synthetic like in Tuscan Leather, nor freshly picked from the bush.

From the heart note, I was already looking forward to a masculine finale in the base, as the notes clearly point towards a distinctly masculine direction...but unfortunately, this does not come for me. Neither the counterpart through woods, nor anything green-herbaceous-mossy like oakmoss or tree bark. Rather, the rose increasingly pushes itself to the forefront, but it also becomes more feminine, as there is no more harsh counterpart. BB still smells very pleasant, but at this point, it loses its uniqueness. Even though you constantly feel that sandalwood is somehow still lurking around. At this point, BB is a mix of Old Bond Street (Atkinson) and Santal Royal (Guerlain).

Conclusion: Airy, bright fragrance that can certainly be worn on several consecutive days, which I couldn't say about any single fragrance in my collection so far. 60:40 feminine in the later fragrance development. I would place BB in the upper third of niche fragrances..you can smell it through and through..the lovely base, however, prevents a significantly higher rating. Longevity of up to 8 hours is great with above-average sillage for such an "airy" scent, without it being a fleeting fragrance.

A scent with depth - strong cedar + birch included. I like it a lot, but I prefer the counterpart from Lattafa even more.

Sweet saffron note at the start, freshly washed bed linen, a lavender sachet on top, old rustic wooden furniture - woody and spicy.

Smoky, resinous, gourmand, cinnamon, heliotrope with cedar and smoky birch. Oak moss doesn't bother me, everything is top-notch.

I only smell musty mold. Can't define it. Pure disappointment.

Once again rose, (eagle) wood, and spices, but still different. It reminds me a lot of "Lux Opulent," but a bit less lavish.

I don’t find it particularly boozy. But it’s very nice and somehow relaxing. Woody spice, a bit of moss, not much flower. Totally smooth & pleasant.
