A First Comparison - A Little Less Too Much

The 2012 version of Eau Sauvage Parfum was for me one of the most successful, most elegant, and most graceful releases of recent perfume history.

To get straight to the point: The 2017 version has lost little of this beauty.

In the old formulation, the sweet-spicy myrrh was immediately present from the start and overshadowed everything that might have wanted to make an appearance. The freshness of the bergamot was only perceptible for a millisecond. After about two hours, the very high-quality vetiver, reminiscent of Guerlain's "Vetiver," joined in. Everything was omnipresent, finely composed, and enveloping. Perfect for cold autumn and winter days.

The new formulation, on the other hand, remains fresh for much longer. I personally perceive the bergamot for a good half hour, even though this spicy base DNA of the perfume quickly re-establishes itself. Even though the myrrh has given way to the elemi resin, the differences to the old version at this point are extremely marginal. This perfume is clearly recognizable as Eau Sauvage Parfum. After about three hours, I also recognize the vetiver. Here, however, it is less pronounced and not as high-quality as in 2012. Overall, the scent feels somewhat less finely balanced than its predecessor.

The longevity and sillage are still at a very high level. The fragrance has hardly lost any strength. However, the problem of the predecessor version remains, in my opinion: If you spray too much, the whole thing unfortunately comes off as a bit too medicinal and quickly loses its elegance. Here, the saying holds true: Less is more!

Fans of the 2012 version will also enjoy this reformulation. It remains very noble and elegant, but is a bit fresher and unfortunately not quite as finely and clearly composed.

The test reminded me again why I sold my bottle not too long ago. The perfume is very strong and offers no notable scent development and thus no variety. Somewhere along the line, it simply annoyed me to smell the same scent structure for hours.

What remains is a little less of too much…

Best regards
