While we're here...

Savage is not a bad fragrance. It smells clean and fresh, with an austere opening. It becomes rounder in its heart note but still remains quite linear. Projection and sillage are good, it radiates far and where it is smelled it also smells strong. In most cases, this is also well received.

Nevertheless, I ask myself: if we are already here, in this digital cabinet of curiosities full of niche fragrances, why Sauvage? No really, why? There are so many exciting, complex and creative fragrances that are unique and so rarely worn. And Sauvage is... okay. No more, no less.

Don't get me wrong, I can understand that it works, it almost always fits and is suitable for the masses. But that's exactly what makes it boring. It's certainly not a bad choice for beginners. For enthusiasts, aficionados and amateurs, it's more of a step backwards.

Because "exciting" "creative" and "complex" is a subjective assessment and in the realm of the ultraniche is often a euphemism for uncomfortable. For the majority of people in the real world, the fragrances we celebrate are usually nothing but strange at best and smelly at worst. Anything that is niche and has a similar pleasing character to Sauvage is immediately labeled a wannabe designer. It's simply gatekeeping, every community will label the part that is liked by the mainstream as banal to put their own taste on a pedestal. Tl;dr: Judging popular things does not make someone an interesting person.

I think you are doing this fragrance an injustice with this review. Sauvage was something completely new at the time, something completely different and not at all like the rest. The benchmark was different back then. You can't measure this fragrance by what came after it. Incidentally, it has a remarkable depth and complexity and is not an everyday fragrance in my opinion. But that's a matter of opinion :)

you also have to remember that it came out in 2015 - that's when the whole thing really got rolling in terms of the depth and complexity of fragrances - before that it was really "niche"
