Feast of a Maharaj
This bold feast for the nose is a favorite from this house. The lavender is strong, but so is everything else: carnation, coriander, cinnamon, mint and the "aromatic notes." I'm guessing thyme or sage. With vanilla and my two favorite woods in the base, this becomes a treasure. No longevity problems here and it projects quite nicely. It's the kind of thrilling scent I have to force my nose to stop inhaling. It's definitely unisex. Love, love it.

Strong, spicy lavender for the intrepid!
Two notes are juxtaposed here: cinnamon and lavender - the opening is a genuine burst of the two unparalled in modern perfume history. Other spices join in: clove and cardamon. After one hour, the fragrance still exhales all its spicyness and even after 8 hs, the scent is still present on my skin. Very high quality materials, obviously. This is a very particular scent with a genuine aromatherapeutic touch. If you don't like lavender and if cinnamon is not your favourite, I recommend you sample carefully before buying. The fragrance is unisex, of course, and comes in the plain Patricia de Nicolai outfit - don't confound it with Maharani, by the way. A unique scent - not for everybody. I personally find it very enjoyable.

This is how the art of perfume can be: contrasting, exciting, and sensual at the same time
Few fragrances can irritate as much as Patricia de Nicolaï's "Mahardjah."
This is less about experiencing something completely new and avant-garde, and more about the fact that two well-known fragrance families, which otherwise have very few points of contact, collide quite unexpectedly - a 'Clash of Perfume Cultures,' so to speak.

Here, the lavender typical of classic British perfumery, which we encounter in wonderfully old-fashioned eaux de toilette like 'Caldey Island Lavender,' Yardley's 'English Lavender,' or Geo. F. Trumper's 'Lavender Water,' as well as in newer variations like Czech & Speak's 'Oxford & Cambridge,' meets the equally classic basic pattern of the archetypal oriental fragrance à la 'Shalimar,' characterized by the triad of base notes: patchouli-sandalwood-vanilla, or its spicy-aromatic extension, usually characterized by the addition of clove and cinnamon aromas - modeled in exemplary fashion by fragrances like 'Opium' or 'Cinnabar.'

Not that this balancing act has never been attempted before: the legendary 'Jicky' indeed unites these seemingly opposing poles. However, while Aimé Guerlain successfully strives to keep the fragrance in suspension, making it unassignable to any category and unreadable, his late descendant takes a similar path, but with complete unabashedness.
Here, nothing is hidden anymore, blended and interwoven to the point of unrecognizability, and infused with all sorts of animalic nuances; no, everything is laid out clearly and distinctly: a proudly assertive, herbal lavender, accented only by a hint of fresh mint, followed by a massive spicy-oriental accord, whose protagonists are the aforementioned patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, cinnamon, and clove.
No wafting civet clouds the notes; rather, everything is perceivable in all its brightness and clarity, but also in all its dissonance.

For that is exactly what the fragrance is: dissonant.
The contrast between fresh, mint-cooled lavender on one hand and warm, spicy oriental base on the other could hardly be greater, and Patricia de Nicolaï does nothing to soften this. On the contrary: she highlights the seemingly disparate with all clarity.
Purists may lament that the fragrance is neither a true oriental, nor a proper fougère, nor a typical lavender soliflore, but that is exactly what makes it so interesting and exciting for me.
The inner tension resulting from the conflicting aromas may be stretched to the point of almost breaking - I, at least, find it bearable. Even more: I find it magnificent. This is how the art of perfume should be: contrasting, exciting, and sensual at the same time.

Somehow, this fragrance reminds me of Mary alias Georg Preuße and his wonderful transformation from Mary to Georg, to the Sinatra classic 'My Way,' in his/her version 'So leb Dein Leben' - only the other way around: from Georg to Mary, yet still remaining Georg, and always being Mary again.

Not a fragrance for everyone, but certainly for those who demand something more from a fragrance than harmony at any cost, even at the cost of boredom.

And this fragrance is certainly not boring.

The Dance of the Seven Veils!
In the distant Orient, about 300 years ago, a fat Sultan lies on a chaise longue piled with thick cushions. He drinks thickened tea made from coriander and mint leaves. The scent of this tea wafts through the entire hall. Moorish-oh no, we’re not supposed to say that anymore-so teenage, dark-skinned slaves in baggy pants and large turbans spice the tea with plenty of freshly crumbled cinnamon sticks. Before the gathered fat gentlemen, Fatima performs the dance of the seven veils. Her face (except for her eyes) is veiled, but apart from a sparkling bustier and sheer baggy pants, she is half-naked. She veils and unveils herself with 7 veils made of the finest silk. While doing so, she shakes her belly fat. Each of her movements releases orgiastic, yet completely unsweet floral scents.
The fattest guy on the ottoman next to the Sultan is the Grand Vizier of Hastunichtgesehn. Eunuchs must fan him with lavender branches as tall as trees to keep him from drooling too much at the sight of Fatima.
Suddenly, there’s a downpour, rain pours into the hall. Eunuchs scream like girls, the beautiful wooden tables float in the flood like "All My Little Woodies." Fatima laughs tears, fetches her friends from the harem, and escapes into freedom under the invisibility cloak of embracing vanilla.
Conclusion: This scent is unique, it polarizes, it’s super intense... a scent of superlatives!

What Jicky cannot do.
Comes into play here. An honest, contrasting variation of cold and warm. Lavender and cinnamon. Here, the 'motto for happiness' does not mean that like attracts like (which can be great, but ultimately quite boring) no, here opposites attract and they seem made for each other.

Always on the lookout for the perfect cinnamon, Maharadja has now spontaneously become my bachelor scent today. Cinnamon interpretations from Lutens, Bond, E. Lauder.., not many perfume houses dare to tackle cinnamon, and they cannot hold a candle to Nicolaï.

Profumo hits the nail on the head. Neither this nor that, and yet a great whole. No additives, no musty, gelatinous, animal fats. Live healthier!

I'm drawing a dot on my forehead now.

Dissonant lavender-spice scent that clearly resists genre classification. Seems it didn't catch on, won't be produced anymore: what a shame!

An extraordinary scent, half Oriental on fresh mint leaf with a hint of cinnamon - a small, beautiful, light-footed cousin of Jicky.
