Zadig, or fate (freely adapted from Voltaire)
At the time of King Moabdan, there lived in Babylon Zadig, a perfect youth
He came from a noble family from Messina, which owed its wealth to the
Extraction of bergamot oil. For breakfast, he ate fragrant oranges and
sweet peaches. His expensive clothes always smelled of the finest aldehydes. When the
Time came to marry, he was promised Semira. She was the best match in
all of Babylon. Semira wore a perfume made from the most exquisite fragrances of the time:
Rose from Damascus, jasmine from Provence, Florentine iris and honey
carnation soaked in honey. The day of the wedding approached and the bride and groom considered
themselves happy. However, jealousy and envy were omnipresent even then,
and so the minister's nephew, the cruel Orcan, tried to kidnap Semira
to kidnap her. Zadig defended his bride with all his might and managed to save her
but was badly injured himself in the process. A deep wound to his eye
would not heal and even the great physician Hermes gave this left eye
lost. The whole of Babylon suffered with the young hero and he was given tinctures of
Oak moss, Mysore sandalwood, cinnamon and vanilla to comfort and heal him, even tolu-
Balsam and ambergris also found their way in. Only Semira's heart remained cold. She found, so
she said, one-eyed people repulsive and married Orcan. When Zadig heard this
this, he lost consciousness and the earthy scent of patchouli soon
Messenger of death in the air. Fortunately, just then a simple girl, Azora,
came to the sick man, who, with the arts she had learned from the civet cat, brought the hero
To life. He regained his strength, even the diseased eye healed Grateful and happy, Zadig took Azora as his wife.
Emilio Pucci was an unusual man. He came from one of the oldest
florentine noble families and became a legend not only in Italy. He
was a passionate sportsman, a very intelligent person and a successful
Politician and, incidentally, founder and couturier of a successful
Fashion brand. He also created fragrances himself, and so in 1971 his perfume
'Zadig' was created in response to an endless
session of parliament that lasted days and nights Parliament to elect a new head of government. Pucci took part
as a deputy in this marathon session and suffered from the boredom
and the stuffy air in the parliament building. In a nearby hotel, he had
set up a laboratory in a nearby hotel and ordered a perfumer there. During the short
Pucci went into this laboratory during the short breaks between sessions and gave the perfumer directives for
the composition of the new fragrance, which was to evoke the aromas of a city in the Orient
should evoke. And so 'Zadig' was born, a fragrance like an oriental
fairy tale Fairy tale.
In Grace Hummel's blog 'Cleopatra's Boudoir' I found a pyramid that
describes 'Zadig':
'Zadig' describes:
Top notes: Aldehydes, Messina bergamot, orange, peach, coriander
Heart notes: Carnation buds, carnation, rose, honey, Provençal jasmine,
Manila ylang ylang
Base notes: Oakmoss, Abbessinian civet, mysore
Sandalwood, bourbon vetiva, benzoin resin, patchouli, cinnamon, vanilla, tolu balsam,
tibetan musk, ambergris.
This pyramid also reflects my impressions. The
Magic of 'Zadig' has certainly not only cast a spell over me.
