In the Salon Car of the TEE Rheingold
It was my first train journey ever in 1973…
Back then, my grandparents took me on a trip to Beckenried at Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, so I wouldn’t annoy my parents who were involved in building a house. We traveled on the legendary TEE (Trans Europ Express) "Rheingold," a very luxurious diesel multiple unit of the DB by today’s standards, from Cologne to Switzerland.
In this train, there was a dining car with a salon compartment where smoking was allowed, which suited my grandpa with his obligatory Sumatra cigars and my grandma with her Senoussi cigarettes very well.
I experience this stuffy-musty atmosphere every time I apply Terre de Sarment by Frapin…. My grandpa with his cigar and cognac and my grandma with her amber cigarette holder and the Senoussis…. She drank some sweet liqueur after meals…. back then….. A long time ago.
For me, Terre de Sarment is an absolute symbol of sophisticated smoking salons on cruise ships and long-distance trains of days gone by. Tobacco smoke mingles with the aromas of fine brandies, heady ladies' perfumes, Brisk hair cream, and mothballs. Mysterious, sultry, and in a subtle way, very erotic. Yes, I am captivated by this scent, and alongside Caravelle Épicé, this Frapin is the best from the brand for me. L'Humaniste, however, completely misses the mark for me.
The fragrance combines the characteristic spirit notes typical of Frapin, along with fruity-citrus accords, with a balsamic, spicy heaviness… something leathery also resonates somewhere in the background, giving the scent an irresistible sex appeal for my nose… similar to Weil fragrances of past times.
Well, tastes thankfully differ, and Terre de Sarment truly presents one with a decision…. Therefore, I want to champion this fragrance: Show taste and choose it! A test is highly recommended. For me, it has been an olfactory revelation after a long time! ;-)
….back then, I pestered my grandparents for so long until my grandpa showed some heart and bought me a model of the TEE train, which I still have today! For Terre de Sarment, I didn’t have to pester; I tested and bought it in a Cologne perfumery… it will surely accompany me for many more years….
