The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
When a group of five teenagers invites a mentally disturbed hitchhiker into their car at a gas station in the Texas backcountry, they have no idea of the murderous nightmare that lies ahead. That's the story in short. Director Tobe Hooper crafted a horror film classic in 1974 using an extremely skillful perspective with the camera, quick cuts combined with sounds and music, creating an incredibly dense morbid atmosphere where the real horror mainly unfolds in the minds of the viewers, who must half-unconsciously witness the fate of the protagonists in the clutches of an uncivilized cannibal family, as if they were experiencing a nightmare themselves. Despite the reduced level of violence depicted, it was banned as one of the most disturbing films of all time.
While the film was based on a true event, this was not entirely fabricated, but later turned out to be a bit of a marketing gimmick. Although the actions of the Wisconsin-based serial killer and grave robber Ed Gein influenced the film, he also inspired famous film characters such as Norman Bates (Psycho) or Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs). Nevertheless, he gave birth to one of the most popular characters and anti-heroes of the slasher genre on screen: Leatherface. His passion is - and now everyone really only gets one guess - of course the slightly repurposed use of the chainsaw.
The original title of the film: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Blood Court in Texas.
Immediately after spraying Chainsaw, the smell of gasoline permeates the air. Unleaded. Unhealthy. Exactly the substance that has been banned in the EU since 2000. Here it comes alive again, taking you on a time travel, leaving you standing next to the pump, the nozzle securely grasped in your hand. Texas in the 70s. Hot wind blows through your hair, tousling it, grains of sand torment your eyes. You turn your face away protectively. Next to you, a van with five teenagers waits. Ready to go. Looks like fun. A lot of fun. What does that old coot want in between? Doesn’t matter! He’ll probably be taken along. Hairspray. You catch a whiff of hairspray, see long hair and tight jeans from the corner of your eye, which a few seconds later slide sexily over faux leather. The ignition starts, a door slams shut, wheels spin, burnt rubber, dark traces on hot asphalt. With your hand shielding your eyes, you follow the van until it is just a dot on the shimmering horizon, finally disappearing from view. A click pulls you out of your thoughts. You reach for the nozzle, bring it back. Again, that smell of gasoline is in the air. At the register, you lay the bills on the counter, your gaze falls on the snacks, and with a bag of almonds in hand, you leave the store towards your candy-apple red 1966 Ford Mustang. As you get in, you wonder if you can hear the sound of a chainsaw in the distance…
Chainsaw is olfactorily quite monothematic overall, and the structure reminds me of its synthetic-spicy "brother" Gasoline. Of course, there are no big surprises, and they are not intended in this fun concept fragrance, yet especially in the first half hour, the nuances described above can be perceived. You can simply smell the passion, this passion for the machine. Close your eyes, and you hear the powerful sound, the sound when the oil drives the deafeningly rattling engine.
But, by the way, it can also be different. If someone wants to be lulled to (temporary) sleep by the sound of a chainsaw, I recommend the CD of the Swedish death metal supergroup Bloodbath, which will be released on October 26, 2018, featuring their closing song "Chainsaw Lullaby." Well then, good night, Marie.
I thank Achilles for the opportunity to test!
