Understory Gather Perfume

Past the poplars and tall pines, deeper into the forest until the dense fir grove begins back there. A long log forms the ridge. It is heavy. Together we pull it to the fir tree that has its lowest branch at the right height. It gets stuck in the fork of the branches. We gather smaller twigs about the size of you and me. Leaning them against the ridge at an angle. The roof becomes denser. With a freshly broken branch, I sweep the needles together into a soft, cozy floor. You bring fragrant green moss for the head. Snuggled together on the bed of pine needles, fir needles, and moss, we tell each other stories of King Mossbeard and pine roots.

Even the spicy start takes me into the woods. Alongside the poplar leaves and rosemary, the scent of pine is immediately present. The fragrant resin practically drips onto my hands. Occasionally, I perceive smoke, as if these fresh twigs are being burned. Or is it just an association? The fir balsam takes its time for an hour before it warmly envelops me together with the pine. For eight hours, it gifts me with calm, familiarity, and security.

What a shame that this scent is no longer available for purchase!
