This is the third time I've mustered the courage to write a review. Actually, I have nothing to add to my predecessors. Twice when I wanted to write something ... wanted to share ... I thought, "Oh no, everything has really been said."
I have tested many of my decants lately. Also yesterday and today, which made me place an order right away.
But at the end of the day, I sit here alone with Guilty.
I got myself a bottle of this fragrance. I immediately decanted some for when I'm working or studying and want to sniff a scent; Guilty is right next to me. Totally happy after my tested perfumes from today, I found myself back at my desk. I see the Guilty decant, I’m pleased about it, I smell it. Mhhhhh. Simply delicious.
My surroundings have already pointed out the scent to me. Why do I smell so strange, it somehow smells like a cow shed or fertilizer.
I sit here, ready to go to sleep, wrapped in Guilty. I don’t smell cow shed or fertilizer.
I smell leather. Leather that might not be associated with black patent leather shoes. But leather, in cognac color, leather that is smooth but matte on the outside. Inside, it has more of a rough texture. Maybe a bit like the old rectangular leather backpacks.
I can't really perceive the patchouli; I can't say anything about all the other notes either, but I believe the main role here is played by the wood leather. The scent is totally linear. When I spray the scent on my hand in the evening, I can still perceive the wood leather in the morning. The scent diminishes, it is noticeable but weak. Mainly, in the morning, I perceive a kind of spiciness that I would describe as peppery.
The scent lasts long, yet I was constantly searching for a fragrance that I was just as addicted to, a scent that remains just as consistently dirty, a scent with perhaps more depth and something more complex and even longer-lasting or with more sillage.
I searched, asked many perfumers who already have many leather scents.
But to be honest, none of them have been it so far. I got to know many leather fragrances (thanks to the perfumers) that are good and that I will also acquire. But none was like Guilty.
In the end, I got to try the similar scent from Kilian - Dark Lord. The opening of both is indeed similar. But only for a minute. While Guilty is totally linear, the Kilian scent is really very complex and changes. After a few minutes, the scents no longer resemble each other for me.
I'm not saying that the Kilian scent is bad because of that, no, not at all. I think it is more socially acceptable. Not a crowd-pleaser, but ... perhaps more pleasant for other noses than Guilty.
I find Guilty really delicious and it has a very unique character compared to what I've smelled so far. It smells delicious; you can't ignore the scent, it is present and shows very confidently that it is there.
Whoever wants authentic leather will be well served here, but should bring a dose of healthy self-confidence.
Just like the motto: If it's too strong, you're too weak.
Thank you for sharing, I feel the same way! I also have a tester on hand because it gives me a sense of comfort, just for me. I really like the Kilian as well, in its own way :-).
I recently tested the scent as well - and I feel very similarly to you. It evokes associations of motor oil for me... a smell I’ve connected with freedom since childhood. Back then, we used to take long trips in a rickety VW bus... Since then, I’ve loved the “scent” of wood fire, motor oil, tar, sun-baked asphalt, and well-worn leather.
Thanks for your great review, which confirms my impression of this fragrance! :)
Nice story! I personally find other leather scents, which you describe as weaker and more suitable for everyday wear, to be more intense, and I see the Gucci here as quite pleasing. Perceptions seem to vary that much! :)
I haven't really come across a good leather fragrance that completely resembles another, except of course for all the average creations.
Even though I no longer own Guilty, I used to wear it a lot and really enjoyed it.
