I usually don't have any issues with reformulations or bottle changes, as I enjoy the Chanel EdPs and both the old and new L'Art et la Matières from Guerlain. L'instant Magic is (unfortunately) different. There are worlds between the old and new formulation, at least for my nose.
First, I tested the new version, initially just on a paper strip, and it smelled quite pleasant! To my dismay, the fragrance turned out to be a reliable migraine trigger when applied. A really nasty plastic note burned itself into my nose, combined with an unpleasant, artificial sweetness. Phew....
Then I found a leftover bottle of the original version and thought, why not give it another try... And indeed: a bull's-eye! No trace of artificial almond or plastic, instead a dreamy freesia with masses of beautiful, finest almond powder. Very airy and delicate, simply a dream. And also subtle enough not to annoy those around me (so far, no one has complained...).
I never thought the two versions would differ so much. I can't (stand) the current version, while I can hardly get enough of the original! It looks like I need to stock up while there's still some of the original version left :)
@Hippokamp I'm the same way. The new version has something synthetic about it that I really dislike. Unfortunately, I feel the same about Shalimar and some other fragrances from Guerlain. I believe they now use a certain synthetic sandalwood that gives me headaches and makes my nose burn. Such a shame!
Luckily, I'm not the only one who feels this way. I liked the first version the best. Back then, it was my favorite scent. I was disappointed with the new version. There's something about it that bothers me... what a shame!
I also find the difference to be extreme. The new one is way too sweet and nutty for me, a gourmand. The old one was already quite creamy, hardly sweet, and not nutty at all.
I don't know exactly when it was released. But the new one is the current bottle shown in the picture, and the old one is the one with the rounded bottom (which is also the bottle of L'instant Millésime Iris Noel). I also don't understand why the difference between the two versions is so extreme for me...
Thanks for the reply. That's very interesting. So I have the new version 🙄
