It was good, but I'm waiting for it to be great

Iris is a note that I've recently fallen deeply in love with. This all started with the excellence that is Dior Homme's powdery, sticky iris, and another Guerlain fragrance, Shalimar Millesime Iris. Both are examples of iris done how I personally like it, and while Iris Torréfié is a very good and well crafted fragrance, it just doesn't quite scratch the itch that the others have. The iris here is far soapier and less powdery, giving a more well-rounded appearance as opposed to a syrupy one. I think this is due to the citrus and sandalwood notes giving it a bit more of an edge than the others have. As it dries a fair bit of a gourmand character comes into place, namely with a coffee/vanilla/resin combination that again works quite well, but in my opinion it further polarizes the iris note to something different than I personally wanted to see. It's a good composition overall, and I definitely enjoy wearing it, but I think there are fragrances I'd much prefer to this one.

I do want to mention however that I was wearing this out of a sample I received directly from Guerlain, that also has an older logo on it, which makes me wonder if mine hasn't gone off just a bit due to age. I've had this happen with other samples, and once I smelled it out of the full bottle my opinions changed dramatically, which is why I think I need to give this one another chance, but sample it out of a bottle as to let the perfume really show it's character. Even without that however, I think it's a solid composition that's worth experiencing!
