No ode

I promised to compare the previous Ode variants with the new fragrance. The first Ode ( Shalimar Ode à la Vanille ) I missed, the second and third I have.

The competition is not entirely fair, after all, the new fragrance is not an "ode". It was wise of Guerlain to call the new fragrance no longer "Ode à la Vanille": so you go out of the way of the comparison.

The jury is also biased: a Shalimar wearer who particularly appreciates the top note in "Shalimar" - the top note that puts off so many.

For comparison compete:
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar
Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia
Bourbon vanilla bean.

START.
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique starts with lots of bergamot and distinct animalic hints - and stays that way for a while.

Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar quickly loses the bergamot and is bright, radiant and spicy from the start.

Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia seems lame and bland next to it, the bergamot is completely missing, the civet only hints.

The vanilla bean smells dark, woody, oily, absolutely unsweet - and actually not vanillig.
No, Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia does not smell like a vanilla bean: the dark, woody-oily is not present, the scent is equally warm and soft.

AFTER 10 MIN. the civet in Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia is pronounced enough to stand up to other scents. I like the fragrance at this stage - but its competitors even more.

AFTER ONE HOUR, Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique becomes less animalic, vanilla emerges - and remains. After two hours, you notice it clearly.

Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar is still radiant-spicy, vanilla is also perceptible here. Since I know that the fragrance will remain so luminous and not too sweet until the end, I take it out of the comparison now. This was and is my favorite variant.

The civet of the Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia is still there.

3. HOUR.
Mexique becomes sweeter. The citrus is still there, but is almost covered by vanilla. Chocolate I have never smelled in the fragrance, but incense is discreetly perceptible.

Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia loses civet and becomes more flat.

Vanilla bean has a fragrance development! You can guess vanilla as you know it. Still wholly unsweet. We now also leave out the pod, it would unfold its vanilla soul only "diluted" in the dough.

BASIS.
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar is vanillig, rather spicy than resinous.

Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique is sweeter, but also more resinous. Almost too sweet for me, since I like it resinous, I still like the scent.

Vanilla bean remains vanilla bean.

Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia unfortunately weakens. The fragrance has become a pure vanilla scent, soft, round, not particularly sweet - but only vanilla. A very nice vanilla, with a bit of wool in it - but so can the others. If I want vanilla, I can reach for "Collection Extraordinaire - Orchidée Vanille | Van Cleef & Arpels", which "Vanille Planifolia" reminds me of towards the base.

CONCLUSION: Guerlain has done everything right. A small beast in the top note to make the Shalimar lovers mild. Small enough not to ver-stimmen the non-lovers. A round, pleasant vanilla fragrance, cozy and easy to wear.

The phrase "Finally a Shalimar for me!" you will hear more often, which is perfectly fine, you just have to be aware that here "Shalimar" is only in the name. We know that by now, many Shalimar flankers have little in common with the original - and "Black Opium" is not "Opium" at all.

I will use up my bottling, this is a nice fragrance. Would I buy a bottle? At the current price certainly not. Since Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique has become much cheaper after a while, I would wait and see.

And the winner of the contest? Lyra Eau de Toilette . Finest Guerlain vanilla, this time in the fragrance, not in the name.

I'm rather cautious with Shalimar. Great comparative work with a good sense of humor "Vanilla pod remains vanilla pod" and the winner is...
Very much enjoyed reading 🏆

I really like the original Shalimar. The EDP that is now in stores is almost too sweet for me. But the ETD can still do it!

Comparisons make the scent descriptions much more meaningful to me, thank you! Great punch line at the end

Great breakdown and I think this one is great because it's not a Shalimar at all, but absolutely agree with you that the name is "abused" here to probably be able to use the beautiful bottle

Great comment! I like these comparisons very much, there I can always get a good picture. I know the first Ode (but not the others, unfortunately) and I find it not very vanilla compared to the Planifolia, but resinous and it smells like the original Shalimar, but gets smokier as it goes on. And although there is no civet listed, I can smell it clearly :-). Vanilla is for me there only subliminally perceptible.

Very nice comment! Seems to be a fine fragrance, but can not convince on the full line. Your winner "Lyra" I also find very nice :-)

Exciting. No hymn. I know LYRA. Absolutely glorious. But it hasn't been around for ages. The way the new Guerlain Flanker is being hyped right now, I can totally see it selling out.

So a vanilla scent for people who would like to have Shalimar on their shelf but don't like it? :)

Thanks for the review ! That was exactly what interested me just now after testing Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia...How do the other Shalimar vanilla flankers smell ? Surprising also your "test winner", which appears only at the end. ;-)

You have fabulously "klamüselt" apart ;-). Personally, I stay with my restflakon Mexique, because he has more character for me. But I can also well understand that many appreciate this new one here. And it is also beautiful. Only for me, this is simply not a Shalimar, but an independent fragrance.

Thank you very much for your review! Unfortunately I don't know either of the "Odes", so I find a comparison very exciting to read :-)

Now I'm wavering between Mexique and Madagascar - and there, where I actually don't like vanilla at all ...

Thank you so much for this informative comparison. Shalimar Extrait I love, Madagascar I had ...and now this one. Unfortunately, scent blindness strikes me once again. I'm more likely to sense it than smell it. Like Renata, it's okay on the scarf. Therefore, no Shalimar for me.

Thanks for this great comparison, I found very interesting! I have so far become warm with no Shalimar, even if that is certainly rightly a classic. Whether I belong to the faction, finally a Shalimar for me, remains to be seen. I claim times....eher not.;-)

Great, very helpful comment, so much effort comparing! For me, the Madagascar would be first as well, I think. Never really tested the 1st one or rather too long ago. Wouldn't dare to order a (used) bottle of Ode-Madagascar though.
I like them all, each in its own way. For me, Planiflora is already an Ode substitute, but probably simply because I don't have another Ode bottle *laughs*. Quasi "Ode à la Vanille hoch 2.

I clearly belong to the "finally a Shalimar for me" faction. Thank you for your comprehensible "unraveling" of a part of the Shalimar family. As a Shalimar lover, I'm sure you're a teensy bit disappointed with Planifolia, yet you judged fairly
Very good commi.

Vanilla bean handed over. I sold my Ode a la Vanille after receiving this fragrance. For me, this one is more wearable. And I also still recognize the urshalimar from the early years.

Thanks for your comparison, was totally interesting to read.
I have some Shalimar Flanker as bottlings and samples, now I bought the Millesime Vanilla Planifolia as a bottle and I am very curious how I will like it.

A really informative and successful discussion of the Shalimar vanilla. I like the original mother very much and I know some members of the now very large family. Sur la route du Mexique I still have in good memory.
Soon a sample of this flanker flutters into my house, I'm always curious.

Super great breakdown. I also have the two Ode variants as you and have me of Sur la route de Madagascar immediately still a bunker flacon togelegt, because the is also with me in the first place.
Your CONCLUSION: I can underline 100%, Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia is a beautiful, round and well wearable vanilla fragrance
I got my bottle yesterday, with me the scent unfolds much better on the scarf than on the skin....

Thanks for that breakdown. I think I should really test him times. Have him already times put on the watch list as a precaution.
