The Gate to Hell?
Hekla is one of three fragrances from the lifestyle brand Gydja Collection. Gydja means goddess, and the company primarily produces accessories, using rather unusual materials (fish leather, etc.) that are meant to embody Iceland. The fragrances are also a tribute to the island in the far north, as evidenced by the fact that they are made with volcanic spring water. Each bottle also comes with a keychain featuring a piece of volcanic rock.
Hekla is the main volcano of a 40 km long volcanic fissure, still very active today, and is referred to as the gate to hell due to its high destructive potential.
So what does a fragrance named Hekla smell like? Destructive? Fiery?
Not at all. Hekla starts off very woody, with a slightly floral undertone and a subtle sweetness attributed to vanilla. The blend seems a bit unusual at first sniff, but is quite elegant and, above all, harmonious. In my mind's eye, I see the barren landscape of Iceland, with mountain ranges in the background topped with snow-covered volcanic peaks, and cute wooden houses in the foreground. My imagination runs a bit wild, and I must admit that the perfumer has done a great job of embodying Iceland's wild landscape. However, I don't quite understand why Hekla is the namesake, as the fragrance is soft and very feminine, the exact opposite of the destructive volcano. Over time, jasmine becomes increasingly noticeable. However, this is also rather gentle and, importantly, without the cat pee note that I so despise. The light sweetness remains and makes the fragrance a very pleasant companion.
Although the scent is quite close to the skin, the longevity is very respectable: I can perceive it as a light whisper for 9 to 10 hours. In my opinion, Hekla is the ideal fragrance for the office or for occasions when you want to smell elegant without being overpowering.
Gydja describes Hekla as the fragrance for the modern woman who seeks mystique and magic in everyday life. I agree, Hekla definitely has something magical and unusual. Unfortunately, the fragrances from this company are not (or no longer) available in Germany, so you have to search a bit for a source. However, it is definitely worth it for anyone who wants a fragrance in their collection that, with near certainty, no other woman in their circle wears. I love my Hekla and will wear it throughout the year, except in the height of summer!
