A conventional floral woody fragrance - inoffensive but unexceptional
This is a perfume created by Anaïs Biguine in 2019 for Jardins d'Écrivains, a brand she created. The perfumes are supposed to evoke books and authors, though this connection is very tenuous.
Loy in the name is Mina Loy, a poet of some repute. Again, I am not sure what in this perfume relates to Mina Loy. The notes are vetiver, jasmine, rose, saffron, Gurjum balsam and sandalwood. Gurjum comes from the Dipterocarpus genus of trees in South Asia. It smells of patchouli, pine and camphor, supposedly. Loy has some similarity with Bois Imperial because of spicy woody notes.
I am underwhelmed by the overall impact of this perfume. It has everything that is listed as notes, but there is no synergy. The jasmine and vetiver opening makes me question the value of this combination. The core of the perfume is the saffron, gurjum and sandalwood. Rose is not very detectable. The base notes are similar to the heart notes.
The performance is very good on my skin. I can detect the woods and saffron on my skin even after 6-8 hours. Loy doesn’t project much, and it is not expected to do so as it is a woody scent. It can be used at work, as it doesn’t really have any jagged edges.
I cannot really recommend this one as I don’t have a really good reason to do so. If you have other woody scents with floral notes, you may not get much value from Loy. It costs about $85 for 50 ml, so it is a great bargain. Be careful not to project on it qualities that it does not have, because of the literary allusions.
