Beautiful ginger
This is one of the fragrances I regretted the most to empty the bottle. It is a really clean, summerly scent with a lot of fresh notes. It has the right amount of ginger to get me going. On my skin it skips the heart notes and the base does not last for long. Both sillage and longevity is poor. But I love the first blast of freshness that it does not matter. I am a fan!
I adore the bottle. Square and decorated with lovely black patterns and Old School writing. And the lovely black diffuser - just so delicate! It will look great on any dressingtable.

Conflicting signals
Expectations can sometimes make the brain jump to a conclusion. Then, when finally meeting the object of your expectations, it turns out to be something far away from what you thought. That is exactly what I experienced with Mistress.
I saw the bottle and decided, like a million times before, that I had to own it because it set off my imagination of what was inside. The cube-shaped glass with its black lace decorations and the silk atomizer made promises of a seductive, spicy oriental and warm scent. A whore’s boudoir with loads of colourful scarves hanging from the walls for decoration. A dressing table filled with bottles and jars of brass, ebony and china, containing her beauty’s secrets. Items from her wardrobe spread out randomly around the room. And the smell of incense, exotic flowers and musk. Well, reality could not be further away from this assumption.
The first encounter is freshness - lots of aldehydes and ginger. I dare say that this could be taken for a unisex scent. It evolves beautifully directly into the base notes, totally skipping the heart notes, at least on my skin. But a lovely dryout with especially oakmoss and cedar. Unfortunately this is not an enduring scent. It disappears after 3-4 hours.
So, was I disappointed? Not the least. Surprised yes, but never disappointed. It was a wonderful experience to meet this somewhat different mistress, even though she was sending mixed signals. She is great for a summer afternoon, a shopping trip with the girls, a day at sea. Just remember that she is volatile so keep a room for her in your bag.

Seduction in Shower Gel Format
Like my predecessor, I can't help but immediately sense a twin (though without having the beautiful "Kill Bill" siren in my head). However, this one comes less from the Turquoise D and more from the D-market. Because just like Mistress, about 80% of the men's shower gels available on the market smell the same. For example, there's a lovely green one from adidas - I'm telling you, it's the exact same scent! At least in the first 30 minutes.

I must admit, this caught me a bit off guard; personally, I don't associate much with the name Jasper Conran, but the word "Mistress" lured me into a completely different corner. It seems to me that here, one wants to hint more at the masculine in the feminine rather than something exclusively sensually alluring, which could have been evoked by warm-spicy aromas, opulent flowers, or similar.

Mistress starts off green, slightly bitter, fresh, and spicy. The listed top note is easily detectable, without the aldehyde component being too dominant. Only a hint of soapiness is discernible, which actually works quite well. The heart note, on the other hand, clears the way for the lotus, and the scent drifts into a slightly aquatic realm, and in the head, it already screams "shower gel" again.

The base, however, makes the scent interesting, beautiful, and - yes - somehow also sexy. Towards the end, one can indeed discern an airy chypre, with a lovely oakmoss-cedar-musk base. I really like that and turns the shower gel into a perfume that ultimately presents an interesting twist.

Longevity and sillage are quite good, by the way; so for those who desire a (rather masculine) fresh feeling all day long, Mistress comes highly recommended. Personally, however, it offers me far too little for it to entice me into a purchase.

Gucci Envy
Immediately after applying it, I smell it: fragrance twin! The bells in my brain ring like the Quincy Jones siren from "Kill Bill 1": I know that! Now it's time to concentrate. I want to figure it out. My fragrance memory doesn’t lie, but I can be a bit too impatient and stumble too excitedly through the twists and turns. Images come and go before my mind's eye like wisps of fog in cheap London crime dramas from the 60s. Now, no recklessness. I will figure it out. BANG! Gucci Envy, no doubt, that's it. That feeling of (re)solution, of success - wonderful.

I bought Gucci Envy right when it was released. I immediately liked the scent direction. Green, herb-floral, slightly sour, chypre, angular, edgy, unconventional, sexy.

Mistress by Jasper Conran was released a solid ten years later and is - at least on my skin - an almost exact Me-Too of the cool, modern green from Italy.

So here’s a comparison of the fragrance notes (in parentheses: undisputed fragrance notes of Mistress “M” and Envy “E”):

Top note: (M: Aldehydes, ginger, citrus fruits) bergamot (E: pineapple, freesia, peach)
Heart note: (M: lotus, ylang-ylang) jasmine, rose (E: hyacinth, lily of the valley)
Base note: (M: amber, oakmoss, dried fruits) musk, cedar (E: iris, sandalwood)

Interesting, but not really conclusive. The differences are quite significant. However, Mistress, just like Envy, starts off very green, bitter-herb-citrusy, fresh and cool, transitions into a floral heart that, just like Envy, becomes very green and very floral, and ends in a warm, green-woody base, just like, right, Envy.

Mistress may have a slightly softer and less woody base. Nevertheless, the similarity, including the fragrance progression, is astonishing. Just like Envy, Mistress is for me a beautiful, green, fresh, chypre floral scent that fits wonderfully into spring or the beginning of summer. Also a bit sexy, but British sexy instead of Italian sexy. I think that's where you can best smell the difference.

Fresh, very citrusy scent with a mossy character, it's green-yellow, not black-white! The best from Conran.

Elegant, classic, and not casual at all. Perfect for a long black evening gown or catsuit. Ylang-Ylang definitely sets the tone.
