Elegant and Casual, Like Fashion

Bath & Beauty, the original, passed me by in the eighties. The name wouldn’t have attracted me either. It doesn’t sound like a fragrance, more like the name of a trade fair for bathroom furniture and skincare products. I always liked Jil Sander's fashion very much, but as a fragrance, at least back then, only number two was known to me, a great scent that my sister-in-law wore. A review on the internet (not here) made me aware of Bath & Beauty. Everything sounded like a Chypre that I might like, and recently I was able to buy it for really little money.

The opening feels familiar, galbanum and bergamot, green-herb and pleasantly bitter, simultaneously powdery and soft. Later, it becomes subtly floral, though I couldn’t name the flowers. I perceive B&B as more green than floral, but the warm kind of green, not the scratchy one. Vanilla and honey sweeten the base very gently, the powdery and bitter freshness remains throughout the entire scent progression, which I like. B&B is a subtle Chypre, elegant yet casual, like Jil Sander's fashion. Absolutely suitable for everyday wear, ideal for work. Not a scent with a wow effect, but one that always works and doesn’t annoy. The puristic glass bottle suits my taste and fits well with the fragrance. The longevity is in the medium range, the sillage could be a bit stronger for me. It probably isn’t suitable for men due to the powderiness.

I don’t know the original, so my evaluation might be a bit more objective, as I approached B&B without comparison or expectations. Can a fragrance evaluation even be objective? Probably not. But I have seen that there must be a vintage in my samples. Hmm, maybe I better not test it, as it could awaken desires that are unfulfillable.

And now I also know which fragrances B&B reminds me of. A little bit of Anais-Anais and Ivoire 2012. And Mr. Pluto is currently wrinkling his nose and thinks that I smell fresh and pleasant.

At first, I was really excited, but I quickly fell out of love. That typical Sander note started to annoy me. I also had the vintage version, but I found it quite similar and just as annoying over time.

A powdery Chypre? Wow. I can't remember the original release either - which probably just means I'm getting old, sigh...

I like it powdery, but I don't know either the old or the new scent. With that name, I would have never thought to test it :).

I don't know either the original or this one, but I usually have to skip powders anyway. At least my wishlist isn't getting any longer ;o)

I think it used to come in an opaque white bottle.
A really nice scent that smelled great, but it never made it into my collection.
Thanks for the comment.

I only know the old version, which I thought was okay, but I never owned it since it didn't quite appeal to me. I don't think the new version will make it into my collection either...

I had the original back then, but I never repurchased it. The new one doesn't excite me either... ;)

Wonderful comment! I also know the original and definitely prefer this new scent here. Normally, this isn't my style since I love vintage, but with Magie Noire, it happened to me again :o) That's life!

The original was one of my favorites, so this one really doesn't impress me at all. However, based on your description, I'll give it a chance to be tested. Best regards!

I agree with Ergoproxy, but anyway, you described this version very well and understandably, and yes, I can't really imagine it on a man either (and I'm usually not that picky). Thanks and cheers to the purist Jil Sander trophy!

If you knew the original... but oh well, I thought this one was quite nice.

I like powdery scents, as long as they aren't too feminine, even on men. This one seems worth a try if it comes my way. Cheers!

Good that you found the similarity with Ivoire. I have that one, and that has to be enough!
